I am going into my freshman year at a state university in the fall, I am majoring in mechanical engineering, I want to if possible apply for the AFA to go next year, after a year at my college. I didn't apply this year, so I have nothing to go with. Even if I applied this year, I probably wouldn't of gotten in. I'm looking for some tips to help boost my application in the next 6 months before the application deadline. I am studying to retake the SAT, and I am of course training for the CFA. Other than getting good grades once I start at college, is there anything else I should do? I have a lot of free time this summer, because I don't get many hours at my job, so I could do a lot, I just need some ideas.

AFROTC plans or any ROTC for that matter?

If you want to be seriously considered, demonstrate how you’re already succeeding in a cadet-like environment. For example:

Take a doolie-like schedule, with a focus on STEM courses and English. (See USAFA’s first-year curriculum so that you can match it as much as your college allows.) Get to know your professors and make a positive impression, because they’ll need to provide assessments of you.

Participate fully and enthusiastically in AFROTC. Be a model cadet who takes initiative and shines. (Side benefit: If USAFA doesn’t work out, you’re still progressing toward a commission.) If your campus doesn’t have AFROTC, join another branch’s ROTC.

Build up your physical fitness so that you can smash the CFA.

Finally, and hopefully goes without saying: Stay out of trouble!

The other benefit of AFROTC membership is that it will give you another avenue to secure a nomination.

Get to know your professors. You will have to have a college English and Math letter of recommendation. Go see them during their office hours and let them know your intentions. Pay attention and engage in class. Don’t forget the fitness test. It also takes practice.

I agree with the good advice above. Definitely join an ROTC unit on campus. Expand your résumé this summer beyond your job, if possible. You'll need your transcript from high school and the transcript from your university too so make plans accordingly. Collect LORs for your nominations from your high school teachers, coaches, employer and others to use this fall. Good luck!
