Hey Everyone,

I'm currently a Plebe here at the Merchant Marine Academy, but I personally don't feel like this place is for me. I know that I made a mistake going here and I'm not sure what to do. I really wanted to get accepted into the Air Force Academy; however, I got denied due my CFA scores which is why I went to USMMA to commission as an Air Force Officer after I graduate. I have no interest in the Maritime industry and everyday during class I would think about why I'm learning about something I'm never going to do in the future.

I am considering reapplying to the Air Force Academy but I heard that service academies don't accept students from other service academies.
Is it possible to get accepted into the Air Force Academy while attending USMMA?

1. Good for you for being aware enough to realize this.
2. I don't think anyone but USAFA admissions knows the answer to your questions.
3. AFROTC? Or do you want the academy way of life? By the time you make it to recognition, I suspect you'll feel differently about a lot of this.
4. I really blame admissions, they bill KP as a Military Academy with a Maritime Program. It isn't. The admissions folks sell all this stuff about AD commissions, that they are totally ignorant about.

Do you want to be an Air Force Officer? Put your head down and work hard where you are, get good grades. Your perspective may change, but you can also plan your exit after a year with some course credits to take along if you apply to a regular college and explore AFROTC. You have to look beyond the 4 years getting a degree to how you see yourself serving in the AF. If you really can’t face doing what you have to do to get an AF commission out of USMMA, then it’s time to plan and execute Plan B.

Although the topic of leaving one Academy to go to another has come up here a few times here on SAF, the general consensus is it doesn’t happen - though a regulation relating to it has not been produced. Of course, I expect it’s possible. But improbable.

If you don’t like where you are, all the power is in your hands to change that.

A few more thoughts - you may have made a mistake, but don’t fail to “be present now,” support your classmates, carry your share of the load, carry out your duties, be sat in every way. Even if the conviction grows in your heart to leave, take the high road and leave on your terms. Don’t self-destruct in academics, conduct or performance. The SAs are designed to suck. This is a test of your maturity and commitment to gutting things out, and learning how to coach yourself through adult life. Pro tip: there will be lots more of these situations in your life. Might as well figure out what kind of person you want to be seen to be during challenging times.

The system is also designed to account for attrition along the way to meet the usual target range for a graduating class.

Make the best of the circumstances in which you find yourself. Give it an honest try.

Two of my ex-classmates are current cadets at West Point. One is '20 and the other is '21. It's 100% possible. The admin tried to convince one of them to stay, because he was a 3/C but he left and went on to his 2nd consecutive plebe year basically.

This is true at the other academies, but not at KP. The KP curriculum is different from other colleges, very little if anything transfers to normal colleges...especially if you're in marine trans. A ton of people joined the Air Force this year, but if you want to get out start ASAP.
