Applying to USNA while attending other SA?

I am curious - and looking to see if anyone has seen this before? Has anyone had experience where the individual did not get appointed to their first choice SA - but took an appointment to another SA - and then re-applied during to the other SA during their Plebe Year?

I know that being a college re-applicant can have benefits. I also know from past experience that many of those who attend USMMA were hoping for USNA. Anyone ever seen this happen?

From everything I've been told , it does not happen for USNA. There is no official policy of which I'm aware, but Admissions has told BGOs in the past that it does not happen. The reasons are twofold. Most importantly, SAs do not want to be seen as "pilfering" from each other; it's a bit unseemly. Second, none of the SAs wants someone who doesn't want to be there and allowing people successfully to apply from one SA to another SA could encourage this practice. The only person I know who reapplied to USNA from another SA (where he had truly excelled across the board) was unsuccessful.

The above said, I recall a mid on this site who posted that a classmate had spent a year at another SA (I think USMMA) before USNA. So I suppose it's not an ironclad impossibility -- but other than that single post I've seen nothing to suggest it happens. It's also possible that there were extenuating circumstances of some sort in that particular case.

Bottom line: If you think you won't be happy at a particular SA, then don't attend in the first place. It is a REALLY, REALLY BAD IDEA to attend a SA hoping: (1) you'll learn to like/love it; and/or (2) that you'll reapply from that SA to your first choice SA with any hope of success. Neither is likely to happen and then you're "stuck."

It is also not a good idea to plan on cross-commissioning (i.e., commissioning into the USAF from USNA). Again, it happens, but is EXTREMELY rare(1-3 in a class) and absolutely no guarantees.

No -- I attended a BGO training session last summer where it was made very clear that USNA would not accept a candidate applying from another Service Academy . While there could be exceptions to the rule, one should never accept an Appointment to one Service Academy thinking that it is a step to another.

Does this also apply to prep schools? For example, if a student is attending USAFA prep school do candidates ever to apply to the other academies in addition to USAFA? This is theoretical only as were discussing it the other day while on a long car trip.

BTW, I am going to miss those spur of the moment times where some concept gets thrown out and we just bat it around for awhile. We have discussed everything from the depth of the base of the Statue of Liberty, to how the US could lure the lunatic in North Korea out of the country and take care of business and whether the country music station should be the first preset on the car radio.

Hypothetical discussions on here tend to go nowhere or the topic keeps changing as others chime in. Better to ask a specific question rather then having people ramble with their opinions about hypothetical situations.

For a few years, NAPS prepared cadet candidates for USAFA. Lance Sijan was one of them. Those were in the early years of USAFA however. NAPS has also prepared candidates for USMMA and USCGA at various points.
