Hey all,

I recently got a letter from West Point that my medical disqualification is final. However, my file is still open for me to complete.

I was disqualified for the following: History of Mood Disorder, Academic Skills Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, History of Anxiety, and History of OCD. None of these have applied to me for many years now, and I recently had a psychological evaluation done that proved I am normally functioning. I had my doctor send this letter to DoDMERB the second the disqualification came (no results yet). The DQ took a very long time to happen since the DoDMERB website is still down and I had my tests done 2 months ago.

Academically, I placed in the top 20% of my high school class with a 3.91/4 GPA (with honors and AP classes). I also scored 1430 on the SAT. Right now I am a sophomore in college, and I got straight A's in both semesters of my freshman year. I also got into NHS and have multiple community service events under my name. Right now, I'm enrolled in AROTC!

Athletically, I was on varsity and was the team captain of 4 sports (football, wrestling, cross country, and track). And I estimate that my CFA score is around 700.

I do not have a verdict on any of my nominations yet.

On top of all of this, I have an LOE in my file!

So given that I have an LOE and that my file is still open, should I hold out on the doctor's letter that I had my doctor send? My assumption is that I have a competitive file but either the quantity of DQs or one of them being non-waiverable is my obstacle here. Any and all recommendations are appreciated!

Call Admissions and ask the questions you don’t want to hear the answers to. It’s not clear from what you have written if a waiver was or was not requested for you, and if it was, the status of the waiver. That is the long pole in your tent.

If you cannot clear medical, and that is final, nothing else matters. This status would also likely be mirrored for AROTC.

You are doing all the right things, but you need to talk to a primary source about your status. If you are under a waiver review, there is still hope.

Hope for a nom. Hope everything else is satisfactory. But go ask those questions you don’t want to, and you’ll know better where you stand.

Let us know how it’s going.

Agree with all that Capt. MJ states. As well, you state your SAT score and I assume that score was achieved without accommodations of any kind? You don’t have to answer here. It is sometimes hard to understand when NROTC (or AROTC) accepts your DODMERB but USNA (or USMA) does not, or USMMA grants a waiver (which is NROTC) but USNA does not. But, when all is said and done each service academy has the sole discretion on requesting and granting waivers. If your conditions are a disqualifier (and you can look up exact language for what DODMERB considers a disqualification) then the service academy has the final say.

USMA has a multi-step review process once a waiver has been requested and someone can be disqualified at any part of the process. As Capt. MJ states, you have to determine if a waiver was requested? If the waiver either was not requested, medical recommendation was “not grant”, or admissions committee decided not to grant, if a waiver was requested and denied your only option is to appeal. That process is a long-shot but your RC can assist and advise with that process. The good news is that if you are in AROTC now (don’t know if it is scholarship or not?) and have cleared DODMERB with waiver for AROTC you are still on path for becoming an Army officer, if you have not yet cleared DODMERB for AROTC I would anticipate similar issues. Good luck and thanks for your desire and willingness to serve!
