Appointed without Nomination?

So I applied to USMMA and didn't receive a nomination so I wasn't expecting to receive an appointment but I guess I did? How is this possible?

Maybe you got a nomination and didn't know about it - my DS didn't know he got a nomination to the USAFA until it showed up on his portal. He never received a letter from his MOC informing us until after we called and asked about it.

There are many more nominations available than appointments. For a candidate that the school really wants, a nomination can be arranged. What good is a nomination to someone who won't be admitted?

DD was told while being recruited, that if she didn't get a nomination, they would "find" one for her. She got the NOM so didn't worry about it. Are you a "recruited athlete?"
