DS received an email that said this:

"Congratulations on your offer of Appointment to attend the United States Air Force Academy!!
As an appointee, we'd like to offer you an opportunity to attend one of the Admissions Office's Appointee Tours offered on April 7, April 21, or April 28*, 2014."

He has received no other notification from portal, MOC, or anything else.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like he is in. Congratulations! Maybe the appointee letter just beat his portal update. I think the portal updates are being made regionally by their USAFA liaison and not all liaisons update the portal or may be waiting on the MOC to notify the candidate. My DS got his appointment in January and the next correspondence was for the academy tour.

My DS got it too

My DS got his in his email today too. I am a little skeptical only because of all the internet fraud going on nowadays and he too has not received any information from the MOCs, portal or received a BFE. We will be calling the admissions office tomorrow to make sure this is not a fraudulent email.

I received an appointment via portal and received this same email. Congrats to your son!

I took an appointee tour last weekend and would strongly suggest it to anyone. You get a great tour of all the facilities and get to shadow a cadet for several hours.

Did you also go to the Summer Seminar? My DS went to SS and also a week for the SAME camp at the Academy last summer. I'm just trying to gauge if he will get much more out of another visit.

I did not, so I have no idea how valuable this would be to you. I also attended several briefings regarding academic schedules, athletics, clubs, and aviation opportunities throughout the day that I found very insightful

DD and I went to the appointee tour last weekend. She had gone to SS and visited in the past. I think we got some good additional information with this tour, though. It's lead by a group of young "butter bars" who graduated last year, so they have very recent knowledge.

DD got a chance to attend a class with a 3 degree. It was a lab, so it was really interesting. She also had lunch in Mitchell Hall, which offered better fare than SS.

At the end of the day, they bring in 4 or 5 cadets to talk about the different clubs. They also bring in the cadets who are leading BCT to give a quick overview and answer questions.

And since this was the Monday right after Recognition, the Doolies were all smiles. A couple of young ladies had to show me the wings on their hats. It was adorable!

This was my question also. DS went on a cadet visit last spring; got to shadow his cadet to all her classes, ate lunch, noon formation, etc. it was an amazing day! Mom also did the admissions brief and went on a campus tour.

Is this similar to the appointment tour?

When we went last spring, we flew out from Chicago the day before, rented a car, stayed in a hotel, did the academy on Friday then drove back to Denver and flew home. Definitely not a trip he can do on his own (since he can't rent a car).

Doable, but not necessarily needed if it's the same thing.

GRADWIFE, thank you, I think I was typing when you posted!

That was the comparison I was looking for!

It's not too much different, actually. Since only a handful of appointees had actually accepted their appointments, the briefers made sure to mention that they wanted people to be sure this decision was right for them, that it wasn't an issue if you decide it isn't, etc. I have to say, unlike the Navy tours, this didn't feel like a recruitment effort. (No slam on Navy - the decision for DD is a tough one) I really felt like they wanted to make sure that you had all your questions answered so you can make an informed decision.
