Appointees Tour

I am so glad to hear they are doing this (again!)! In my kids' day, it was called Orientation (where we met Hornet!), and it was our first trip to Colorado. Very informative, and put our minds at ease.

I agree with Fencersmother. We went 2 years ago with DS#1 and it definitely put our minds at ease and his too, just getting a little more familiar with life at the academy.

I tried signing up for an appointee tour but unfortunately I was put on a waitlist :(.

On Friday lot of parents were waiting for the email. Sorry your put on a waiting list.

Did anyone attend the 3/21 tour that can comment on the day? DS attended sports camp after Soph year and SS after Jr year. So he's familiar with many things, but would not want to miss this too if it gives him a better feel for things to come.

My DS didn't get the tour offer. He attended SS and had visited during earlier in high school. I like the idea though.

We were also waitlisted but called and spoke to admissions and they were able to work with us to do the standard 3 hour tour on a different date but also shadow a cadet and get more "one on one" time with our DS and current cadet. Don't hesitate to call and find a middle ground.

I just got back from the 3/21 tour yesterday. It was a great experience and definitely worth while. I came in with a lot of questions and left with none. Lots of informative briefs about airmanship, academics, athletics, and BCT. Shadowing a cadet was a great way to experience a typical day at USAFA.

Do you know what time the tour start? The confirmation paper has 7:00 am. But, post by SN17 has checked in at 7 am to 8 am and tour start at 8:00 am. Just want to get clarification. Thank you

I went to the tour and check in was 7:30-8am. I showed up at 7:45 and many people were still checking in up until 7:55 and 8:00 am.

Thank you. Around what time did you finish the tour. And does the Academy have a store to get some Academy stuff and you have time to shop?

I finished around 1:45 because I didn't do the optional tour of the athletic facilities since I have already received a tour of them. However, if you decide to participate in that part, you will be done by 3:15. You can get Academy stuff from the visitor center. You will have time to shop a little before 9 am, which is when a 15 minute break is given.

Females may wish to plan to wear their hair in a bun. DD felt uncomfortable on tour with hair down until she put it up. Also dress is business casual as I recall but, of course, adhere to the instructions, Enjoy!

Please pay attention to where the tour starts. Two years ago it was at Arnold Hall and this year on 3/21 it started at the Visitors Center (and yes we went to A-Hall as that is where I thought it started but we weren't the only ones......). Our DD wore nice jeans, casual top and hair down. She was dressed appropriately. It is important to dress in layers as the weather can change very quickly (it was 70 last Monday and snowed/blizzard on Friday morning) and wear good walking shoes as you will walk a lot. I logged over 18k steps on our tour. USAFA does a nice job.

KTMDad: Did your DD spend the day in with cadets or on the tour? The reason I am asking is my DD spent the day with the cadets & at some point, felt uncomfortable with hair down so she put it up, hence my suggestion. Also to repeat a story mentioned in an old post, we are from NY and when chicken fried streak was served for lunch, DD asked what it was. After being told, she then asked why was the gravy white? A cadet answered, "I guess you're not from around here!";) Now she is a big fan & esp. enjoys an egg on her hamburger, which was also a 1st.

Nothing really to do with the Appointee tour but I chuckled when I read your post. Just had lunch with my DS (who is home on spring break). He ordered a "Create Your Own" burger and among his toppings was an egg. :)

DD has done both (spent 3 days at USAFA shadowing Cadets last Fall while staying with a Cadet, and most recently on the Appointee Tour). Each person is different and will take away various perceptions. The Appointee Tour is really designed to showcase the Academy and make sure it is a good fit for each Appointee as Appointee's typically have more than one choice for their education.
