It came out of the blue because he had not received an LOA.

Son has also applied to USNA and USAFA. He has not yet determined which would be his first choice if accepted to more than one Academy. Should he tell admissions officers or interviewers at USNA and USAFA of his USMA appointment?

Thanks for any insight.

congrats to him! did it just come today?

i would suggest that he doesn't yet withdraw from at least one of the other academies, his choice. i'm going for usma and still have my air force app going because you just never know how things might end up! however, as soon as he starts to decide one way or the other where he desires to be, then he should let the ALO and the regional directors and the Blue and Gold's know of his decision so it leaves a spot for someone else!

Congrats to your son! My DS received his appointment to USMA yesterday. He did have an LOA and we knew he was receiving a nom from congressman, but he also received a nom from one of our senators (we don't know which one - haven't been officially notified but it is showing up on the candidate portal.)

Does anyone know when the acceptance postcard is due back to USMA? I didn't see anything about when it had to be back in.

Congratulations!

I have heard it is rude to tell other academies about your other appointments. I still have an application for USAFA going (with a nom) even though I received my appointment with USMA as well. Unless he decides to cancel the other applications, he should wait.

I heard May is the deadline. It is alot easier to accept the appointment online as you don't have to wonder wether the academy received it or not. I accepted the appointment, gave them all the info regarding my uniform size, and scheduled the flight to Westpoint in June, all in less than 10 min so I advise doing it online instead of mailing it even though it doesn't hurt to do both.

Americas Finest - Where do you do that on the website? (accept, give uniform size, etc.)

We haven't noticed any change to son's candidate portal at all that even shows he was appointed.

Thanks for the info!!!

mom43boyz - all of that information (uniform, travel info, etc) is located right on the main portal page after you log in. scroll down to the bottom, its below the "nominations received" box

Curious to know where you heard that. It's not rude at all. It won't affect any applications negatively.

If you have accepted your appointment to USMA - why have you not canceled your application to USAFA?

If you receive an appointment to a SA then you have until May 1 to accept. If you are not sure - then don't accept. Sit on your appointment a while and see what else happens this winter/spring.
Once you accept the academy is planning on you to be at R-Day. This is a commitment. While not legally binding, it is a moral commitment.
If you accept on May 1 and then are appointed to another academy or accepted to another school - you certainly are free to reject your appointment and choose your #1 pick.
However, accepting an appointment while keeping other applications open, especially this early is not very honorable.

Son's candidate portal must not have been updated with the appointment info yet - below the nominations section is still the "additional forms" section that has been on the portal for months.

We'll check back frequently, probably after the holidays since admissions probably isn't there this week.

Happy Holidays, all!

Just wait, it didn't appear in my portal until a week after receiving the appointment. It varies with everyone and I also can't stress enough how the SA might be a bit slow at updating your portal since its the holiday season.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask.

It wasn't from an official source (hence saying I "heard"). I guess it varies with your ALO as maybe a few mind.

I haven't cancelled my application because I didn't accept my appointment until 2 days ago and have been busy (holidays) since. I know it may cause others an inconvenience since it might slow down their appointments if I receive an appointment from USAFA also so I will be cancelling it soon.

America's Finest -
"Bragging" about one's appointment is surely rude.
It would be appropriate to notify the other academies of your appointment if you choose to accept as a reason for either withdrawing your application or rejecting their appointment. SA's and all schools like to know who their competition is.

If you receive an appointment to your second (or third) choice, and are waiting for your first choice - then by all means - call your Liason officer or admissions officer. Tell them that while you are still interested in an appointment you have received another appointment etc. This isn't rude - it is letting your first choice know where you stand.

I agree. :thumb:

I meant to say that some ALO are different from others so maybe it was just my friend's specific ALO that didn't like it or my friend's way of telling him.

Another appointment!

Wow...DS received his appt last week and thanks to what I learned on this thread he did his acceptance online (thanks!!). We are all very excited :thumb: I didn't realize they would pay for his trip in (are we reading that right?)? We have not finalized that as we may want to travel with him a couple of days early. Do most parents try to be there for R day or wait until A day or both? I'm thinking he will want to accept the offer for the hotel the night before - a great chance to meet a few people before the big day. Is there anything for parents to do on R day besides say a quick g'bye?

What about travel home at Thanksgiving - flights look very expensive! Are there deals/discounts to be had for cadets?

luv2swim: what day did your son receive his appointment? how soon did everything online show up?

I got mine last week and it still hasn't shown anything online

Are you referring to R-Day? If so then yes, your travel is covered. They will buy his ticket if he flies alone - I think they reimburse you somehow if he flies with you and you buy the tickets.
We drove and got milage paid. Actually, they direct deposit the travel expense into the new cadet's bank accounts. You have to settle with your cadet to get the money back -

Travel for leave is not paid for. You might be able to get a good deal through the travel agency - however, it is way too early to think about Thanksgiving tickets. The departure times and return times are very precise. There is an opportunity for a bus ride to the 4 major airports - travel is handled very well but expect it to be short notice.

Many parents go to R-Day and many new cadets fly in on there own. It is personal preference. They have a nice day for the parents. After you say good by you will have plenty to do. In the afternoon there is a briefing by the Supe/Commandant/Dean and then they march out for their first parade and swearing-in ceremony.
If you can swing it - go to R-Day and A-Day but if you can only go to one event then go to A-Day. IMO.

Congrats!! Will you be on the swim/dive team? They are at this moment on a training trip, doing 2-a-days, starting at 5 a.m. Of course, this is all bearable because they are in Puerto Rico!

If you can do both R day and A day, go. If you can only do one, I agree w/ Just A Mom: go for A day. They will need/want to see you after completing beast. It meant so much to our son that we were there, and it was so great to see him and know he had survived the ordeal!

Welcome to the USMA family!!

Our Candidate Portal shows what MOC Nominated my son, is there another portal?

No, there's only one portal. :)

Our candidate portal just says MO62 (doesn't say which senator that is).

However, the mystery is solved. We received a letter from the Senator today announcing that she gave son the nom. It also goes on to say "this concludes a major step in obtaining an appointment to the USMA but does not guarantee admission to the acaemy. Please ensure that you have fulfilled the remaining admissions requirements with the academy by contacting them as soon as you receive this letter. I wish you the bst of luck as you await the Academy's final decision on your application.

Mind you, the nomination letter arrived nearly two weeks after the appointment, but whatever!

Son is just glad to have everything done.

Yes - son is a recruited swimmer currently doing two-a-days here and NOT in Puerto Rico :frown:. He received his appt on Dec 23rd and did not look at the portal until today so I'm not sure when it was posted. He knew about the nom a few weeks before the appt. It was a thrill to receive it right before Christmas!
