My son has received appointments to both USNA and USAFA. USNA offer of appointment arrived very well presented with a certificate from the Superintendent. This is a wonderful keepsake regardless of his decision. USAFA offer is an electronic link to a letter signed by the Director of Admissions. A similar certificate from USAFA is only sent to those "accepting" offers. It's not really a big deal because it is only superficial, but when choosing between two very similar institutions sometimes little things like this stand out to a candidate.

Then accept the offer to USAFA and he will have his keepsake.;) If he doesn't accept the USAFA offer, then as a taxpayer, I appreciate them being frugal. Our son got a nice hardcover "thingy" from USMA. I admit it was a nice touch. Yet he chose USAFA after weighing out the trade-offs. So it seems for many, those extra $$'s spent on the jewelry really doesn't matter. I'm positive the impressive jewelry wasn't in his trade-off column for USMA.

USAFA does provide a very nice keepsake certificate (in a fancy folder). The certificate/folder are mailed to the ALO and are meant to be presented at a high school awards ceremony.

Nice to know DS can stop checking the mailbox !! I can say that looking at the handsome USMA mounted certificate on the mantle for the last 6 weeks hasn't hurt his interest in West Point . . . I see the argument from both sides but its a small token given the effort these candidates put into the months long application process. Would not hurt for USAFA to send these out to all appointees; there is competition for the best qualified candidates as in any field and it doesn't hurt to have a visible symbol in front of them while they deliberate.

If that's what stands out to your son, I would definitely choose the school that had the better offer of appointment certificate.
The different appearance of offers make zero difference to the appointee's decision process- it is a huge honor to be granted offers to both schools! Beat Army!

Son has been declined by USNA and Coast Guard Academy due to color deficiency issues. Hoping there will be good news forthcoming from the Air Force Academy. Like most others this process started in February of 2016.

This is my second year applying to USAFA- they could probably send me "you're in" written on a cocktail napkin and I'd still frame it.

Since this is your second year, I was wondering how long you waited last year to hear from USAFA. I just heard from USNA that they could not offer me an appointment this year but I am still waiting to hear from USAFA. Right now, do you think no news is good news? For example, does it mean I am still in the competition?

My DS also was denied by the USCGA and USNA. He is still awaiting news from the USAFA. Until you see the dreaded "we regret to inform you" email, portal update, or letter - you're still in the running. Keep your fingers crossed and ensure Plan B is squared away.

Last year I was rejected April 7th I think. I've already been rejected for usna for the second time this year much earlier than last time though. Nobody knows how these things really work except for the people running it. As long as you haven't received the twe you're in the running, so never loose hope. My West Point admissions coordinator emailed me saying this is the most frustrating year for admissions he has seen, with act and sat reconfiguring their tests and Dodmerb technical issues. I'm assuming it's the same with the other academies. Wouldn't be too worried yet if I were you.
