I just received a call this morning from my state’s representative in which I received a nomination from that I had been awarded an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. My portal does not yet show the appointment, and I was wondering when it would update? Also when do you think my official appointment letter would arrive? Thanks for all of your help and Go Navy!!

Congrats to you! I remember that day well last admissions cycle. Our son's Senator's office did a great job of making the phone call very special. A memorable moment to be sure.
His portal updated within the week, and he received his BFE approximately 2 weeks later (we can't be sure on exact receipt date as it was located slightly off the porch in a shrub, long funny story).

Of course, this being 2020, things are not as smooth sailing as other cycles, so be patient.

Relax and enjoy this moment. You put in a lot of work and navigated the application process which is a feat in and of itself.

Clear a nice place to put that BFE, it is quite special.

MOCs and Senators give nominations .... I didn’t know that awarding SA appointments was in their job description too.

Hmmm .... interesting, and congratulations.

I am under the impression they of course don't award the appointment. Some MOC's just participate in being the bearer of good news. I believe the Academies give a small window of time to reach out to the appointee and convey the happy news. At least that's what happened to our son. The Senator's office asked that he and we be present in the school guidance office. They had staff and other students from the student council present. It was a very nice call, with the staffer explaining the application process and competitive nature to those in the room. Memorable indeed.

It arrived two weeks after the portal updated or two weeks after the phone call?

Getting a bit ahead of myself here, but because I'm overseas, if I received a phone call from my MOC/Senator I wouldn't be able to pick it up (lost my phone number for the move). Would this look bad?

It wont look bad. And eventually it will be in the portal. And also an email (usually) from USNA...which BTW could be from a different email address, so check spam occasionally.

You will need access to your portal and email for certain, but missing the call from the MOC (if they make one....not all do) is simply a missed opportunity to accept and say thank you to them. Which you can also do via a hand written thank you note. Its not mandatory to speak with a MOC.

They may actually track down an alternate phone number if you provided one. I received the call for our youngest.

Also, to readers, answer unknown numbers. And set up your voicemail in a professional way.

DS got a phone call about appointment from MOC on 20 Mar 2020. His portal updated within a month. He didn't get the official certificate in the mail until late June.

Congratulations! Make sure you self report your appointment in the USNA Class of 2025 Appointments Update-Entire-List-Yourself thread

How exactly do I do that😂😂

Congrats on the appointment! Here's the USNA appointment thread. Just read the instructions at the top and you should be good to go!

Not at all..if the MOC is calling to tell you that you've received an Appointment, the decision has already been made. It is USNA that makes that decision, but USNA simply gives the MOC the courtesy of making the call.. If you don't get the call, it will show up in your portal eventually. And if you don't check your portal, eventually a BFE will show up in your mail box (the old fashion way of finding out). Bottom line, you will find out ..one way or another.

Yeah, some who get in don't ever get a call from anyone. (Not that I'm salty about it or anything.. 🙄😉) Actually, true story, hubby and I were invited to help at our Congressman's SA info session (area BGO wanted mid parents there to engage HS students' parents so that they could talk to the students better - Imagine!). It was kind of funny, the Congressman's assistant was running the session and we talked a good bit. She was really salty that she never got to hear who got accepted to the SA's, and that she couldn't get our Congressman to find out and do the whole congratulatory call thing. LOL
