Appointments 2022

I read a lot on the forum about "waves" of offers of appointments.............But I also see candidates like harry6199 who get a phone call from MOC on Wednesday, January 31. (congrats to you harry6199!!). If the appointments come out in waves, what is the explanation for harry6199 seemingly "nonwave" appointment? I see others on the "USMA Class of 2022 Appointment Thread" as well. Just curious about the process. Thanks!

There are big waves that happen at certain milestones...January after 7th semester grades/nominations start coming out, February after nominations were due by January 31st and then again in March after the application closes on February 28th. In between these waves others do get appointments sporadically.

Hi, thanks. What do you suppose sparks those sporadic appointments? I get the wave concept, just these few here or there seem a bit nonsensical from a practicality standpoint with regard to mailings etc.

It may be due to their application not being complete by first wave or needing a medical waiver. Could be a host of things that would prompt an appointment in between waves.

Also, there are people who do not learn that they are accepted until April. So more so than additional waves, it is more like a slow but steady stream with people getting admitted each week after the admissions committee meets and makes decisions.

I believe that the appointments made already are applicants that are recruited athletes with LOA’s, recruited academic students, and direct appointments. It makes sense for the Academy to get the appointments that are guaranteed out of the way first, so they know what/how many spots are open, and focus on the applications with non-direct nominations.

Then why are the AOG Scholarship winners still waiting???

I have asked that question many times. There have been numerous posts on these forums regarding AOG’s and the fact that while they are among the first candidates to be awarded spots in the class there is a slight delay in appointments being awarded to them as admissions decides how to slot them for the good of the balance of the class.

What does it mean to have a direct appointment?

Direct appointments are from your congressional rep, senator, VP that indicate that you are their choice for appointment. Instead of sending in 10 or so nominations for applicants and allowing the academy to choose, they are dictating the individual that gets the appointment, this guarantees the individual an appointment, as long as they ha e met all qualifications for admission.

Ah, gotcha..........and those folks are the ones that the MOC call and inform them of the appointment.....?

My DD has two noms, and LOA and is awaiting word on a medical waiver. Would it be a leap to say that she would get a direct appointment should she be granted a waiver?

@ontothefray22 is correct, direct appointment means admitted directly from HS as opposed to prep school or college or from the enlisted ranks. Our son did not attend SLE and did not receive an LOE or LOA or any calls from anybody but he was a direct admit to USMA nonetheless. None of the pre-appointment communication or lack thereof matters, only the final appointment decision which you will all have soon enough.

It was my understanding that direct appointment means directly to USMA, as opposed to the prep school. No matter what the source. I'm enlisted, but I could still be directly appointed to USMA (and hopefully will be, as I'm too old for the prep school).

She is obviously a strong candidate but again it depends how competitive your district is. Best advice is do not assume anything, hope for the best, and have a viable plan B.

There is no official definition of Direct Appointment. Many people have their own ideas.
