Appointments by Area

Does the Naval Academy do appointments by area? Such as by Congressional District or State? If so, does that mean that if someone in my district has gotten an appointment to the Academy, I did not get one?
As of now I thought my chances were fairly good, as I have VA Senator Kaine recommendation, and Rep Robert Hurt VA 5th District, but I am in to my number 2 choice, and am wondering if I should just commit there now.

Maybe.
The SA looks at each MOC slate and they will appoint 1 from that slate (as long as there is at least one that is qualified). Then the remaining applicants compete on a national basis to fill up the class. If you look at the USNA appointment thread you will see quite a few appointments all from the same congressional district. Unless you are on the admissions board you cannot know which one won the congressional slate and which ones got their appointment from another ranking. So, just because someone is already appointed from your district, you are not out of the game until that TWE shows up.

Look through some of the other posts and it can give you some insight into how the appointments are decided.
Here is one that could help you http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/confused.47122/

I feel many on the list of appointees do not really know where their appointment came from and merely list what Congressional district they live in. Unless a candidate interviews with one source and then is told by that source that they were awarded their nomination, one may never know. Only Admissions knows for sure!

They list what nominations they have, or the ones they know they have. They have no idea what source the appointment came from nor where it will be charged. I suspect that in some cases the source moves around as the admissions process works its way through.

Why would any appointee to either WP, AFA or USNA care where their nomination is charged or to whom. IMHO, the only thing that matters to most of us, is getting that elusive APPOINTMENT AND THAT BFE! I have friends whose parents work in Admissions, that is their job to massage the respective charge slates. Just my .02

Congrats on the Kaine nomination! Fierce competition for that nom! Hang tight.... If your number 2 is a service academy, you don't have to commit yet. If you want to commit for peace of mind and sense of direction, I get that... But I don't think you're out of the running. A Kaine nom is huge!
