I’ve seen some posts here about watches and specifically about CBT but I can’t find an answer to this question - and wanting to give a watch as a gift.

looking at the Garmin Forrunner 55 is the one he wants. Is this an ok watch for West Point. And more importantly is it an approved watch that can be worn at Beast?

if not, what kind of watch is ok for beast?

Smart watches are not approved for Beast (CBT), CFT, etc. If you want to get that for him to use during the academic year, that is fine, just give it to him on ADay. For Beast, and other training iterations, just get him a $50-60 Casio G Shock from Amazon.

Thanks , this is super helpful.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing.
I love my Garmin, and plan to use it during AY, but will probably buy a gshock just for beast.

I don't know if a Forerunner is allowed or not, but I've had to replace it multiple times, and I would rather have something more durable.
Do you feel like it wouldn't be durable enough for the academic year? Which model do you have? It seems to be the one he really wants for WP (beast excluded obviously)

I had the 35, then the 45, and now I recently got the 265😭 I need to stop blowing my savings on running watches.

I had the Forerunner 45 for about 5 years, and I had to get it replaced(thankfully warranty covered) twice. Once was when I fell rock climbing, the other was water damage(supposedly waterproof). It's just not a brand that prioritizes durability(for the most part).

That being said I plan to use mine during the AY, it's just CBT I'm worried about.
Got it - and if it's not allowed during CBT, then you should be good to go with it for the AY, right?

I don't know for sure that a Garmin is allowed Ihope so.

I did some digging and current cadets a few years ago were recommending basically the same thing. Gshock during CBT and Garmin for AY.

So I(a humble Cadet Candidate) would send it.
My son uses an Apple Watch Ultra for the AY, but the G Shock for the summer training stuff. Keep the G Shock around as you would probably use it now and then. I'm pretty sure he will have to use the G Shock for Sandhurst Comp. as well.

As long as the watch is a conservative color like black, or navy blue, or silver, you should be ok.

My son used a G-Shock for Beast and a Garmin for AY. My guess is the G-Shock will be used again for CFT this summer.

Does anyone know if a multiband 6 g-shock is permitted? I am looking at getting this one.

FWIW, my DS wore a g-shock to Beast and the band broke within the first few weeks. He just bought a basic watch for $15 at the Exchange to replace it.

He said all he needed from a watch was an alarm that woke him up five minutes before the cadre start banging on the doors in the morning.
