April 16 still on hold

So very true! And what a great photo:)

Is he starting SUNY in the Fall? My DS was adamant that it was KP or bust (he may soon very well be dealing with his first real-life disappointment if it's bust). I told him he is applying to USMMA and SUNY come May 15. If he wants to be a Merchant Marine, he's gotta keep more doors open.

Yes he will a Privateer this fall as an NROTC programmer. We visited SUNY on Sunday, drove back to MA for school on Monday and then back to USMMA Monday night for an overnight Tues/Wed. Loved both. DS wants to be on a boat and by applying to only maritime/NROTC/USNA he made it happen. Very proud!

agreed! NROTC at SUNY Maritime is THE best possible secondary outcome. I am happily filling out mountains of paperwork at the moment. He says he will reapply to USNA and USMMA but I know he's going to love SUNY. I had such a good feeling when we visited and he was full of talk on our ride home. He and I both admit that this had a slightly stronger sting than the USNA turn down but I am thankful that we aren't waiting anymore. Such a weight has been lifted and he's back to laughing and joking rather than waiting and worrying!

That bottle of Champagne that I have been saving will finally be opened tonight and we will celebrate! It's Bollinger. It is our honorary Champagne because it was saved from destruction by Patton's Third Army. My father in law, the handsome devil on the left hand side of my screen picture was there. The retreating Germans were in the process of rigging the winery with explosives when 3rd army arrived. They were in the right place at the right time. For this and many other reasons, I don't believe that it is cliché to say that everything happens for a reason ;) Good luck to everyone still in the running!!

This is the coolest story ever!

Best of luck to your DS. I agree - just knowing where they are going is a huge stress relief for these kids!

DD was going to go to TAMUG until sponsored prep came through. It was still her decision, and as I told her, "there's no bad choices, either one is good." Best of luck to you!

I didn't think champagne, unlike Madeira, Bordeaux and Barola, would still be good after 70+ years?! Let us know how it was.

This was NV but you would be surprised ! Many of the very good vintages is carefully preserved can be amazingly long lived! However I'm with you. Better to try your luck with a fortified or a good Bordeaux - cheers - sorry to go off topic

Damn. Sucks to see kids who really wanted it get denied, when you know that there will be someone who quits during day zero of indoc. The admissions department should really put more weight into whether the applicant really wants to go to KP.

They will be dropping during Indoc, and then when academics start and finally during sea year when the real enormity of the commitment comes to light. . .

That's a great fallback plan. We're busy with the paperwork for our own.
And let me add my kudos for a great story. But why would the Germans blow up .... a winery? A bridge I can understand, but an intact winery full of vintage wine would only have slowed the advancing Americans down. :tank1:

Americans maybe, French for sure.

I don't think anybody now really drops because of sea year as much as they fail too many sea projects and are shown the door.

They still drop after the 1st sea year. I know of 3 who quit when they came back from sea...said it was not for them. One quit after they passed their project. Not sure if they quit mid tri or left at the end of the tri.
