Are DoDMERB Conditional Appointments Common?

Hello, I recently got a letter from DoDMERB stating that my medical status has been disqualified due to a nut allergy. I am currently working on some AMI to get a waiver for this issue. I have so far received two nominations to USAFA, one to USMMA, and one to USNA. In the case of USAFA, are the DoDMERB conditional appointments common? My portal does say something along the lines that USAFA will not normally make an offer of appointment until a candidate has a qualifying medical status. Should I be worried? My application has been complete since late November and I have had my Senate nom since 14 December.

The SAs have the flexibility to manage this situation how they choose.

If you have been researching related threads, you know by now each Service has its own waiver policy for a given DQ, because each Service has different missions, gear and operating environments. One might be waived by USAFA but not by USNA, for example.

You have to be fully qualified (academic, medical, athletic (CFA)) with a nom to be offered an appointment. I think only USMA officially informs candidates if they are fully qualified.

Generally, the DOD SAs do not make an offer of appointment to applicants who are not Q or waived. But, I think we had some recent posts where an applicant was given a conditional appointment, pending medical, for USAFA, if I recall correctly. It was different than an LOA. It seemed different than past practice. USCGA does use conditional appointments.

You may want to go to the DoDMERB website and read through all the menu items on the left, the process, FAQs, workflows.

You can control none of this after you submit AMI. That’s why appointments flow into May and sometimes beyond. It takes time to fully resolve a candidate’s status, especially if working his or her package in parallel with others on a slate.

Focus on what you can control, tend alternate plans, PT to manage stress. There is also no need to duplicate posts across forums. Someone will usually respond.

Okay thank you!

I’m in the same boat as you. DQ’d for a peanut allergy. Just patiently(ish) waiting for the waiver process to kick in.

Me too. I have emailed everyone I can and nobody has anything to say other than ask dodmerb or wait. You will have to pass an oral food challenge to get appointed. Where are you from? I am from Tennessee.

I’m from...Utah. Admissions has told me basically the same things. They said I’ll be notified about any waiver decision, but have no timeline on when they could happen. I’ve actually passed an oral challenge after completing oral immunotherapy. Best of luck to you!
