Are injuries after DoDMERB always reported?

Hello,

I was at a soccer tournament last week and I twisted my knee. I did not get it checked out until Friday because I was out of the country and did not have a chance to see my provider. The doctor had me take an X-Ray and said that it was all looking normal.

I had my follow up appointment today (Tuesday) and the doctor told me that I had just sprained my MCL and LCL and to stay on my crutches for a few more days. The swelling has gone down and I can finally begin to walk/limp on it. I have also been doing some stretches that the athletic trainer gave me to keep my knee from being stiff. I do not need surgery and I was asked if I wanted to do physical therapy which I said yes to.

Do I need to report it to DoDMERB? I am an ROTC scholarship winner and I have already been passed on my DoDMERB and I am worried that it will have negative effects on me.

Thank you all.

If you have received a qualification letter from DoDMERB, somewhere on it under "General Information" item #2 it should state something to the effect of "You must immediately notify DoDMERB if there is any illness, injury, or change in any medical or dental condition after you finish your medical examination."

Bottom line: (for Army ROTC)
If you have not yet signed your DA 597-1 scholarship contract (you must have passed DoDMERB and the APFT to do this) , then you must notify DoDMERB and will likely be issued a remedial to get the sprain cleared.

Once you have healed, the remedial can be resolved and you can then proceed with the contract. If you are a 4 year winner, you might be at risk of not receiving funds in time for Fall. If you are a 3 year winner, you will have your freshman year to get cleared by DoDMERB.

Thank you for the quick response. I have reached out to them and now I am gathering doctors notes and X-rays to send DoDMERB. I hope this helps others that encounter this situation in the future!

One more thing. Make sure your ROO is aware of your situation.

If you are completely healed and you pass the APFT when you meet with your new battalion, you should be good to go.

Good luck, and keep us posted on how it all turns out.

29June2018 UPDATE: I finally had my MRI and I was told that I have torn my ACL and MCL. I can walk perfectly fine now and possibly jog but it feels a little week when I do run. I am now DQ'd on DoDMERB and I am waiting to hear back from the folks that handle the waivers. I have to wait and see what my ortho says about whether or not I will need surgery. The difficult thing is that if I do have surgery, it will be around my first month of college and so it definitely will make things a little more difficult. Will also inform cadre about the injury.
