and if so whats the up/down side to this practice?

Technically there is not, however it is still very important to get your app in early.

Last year there were no rolling admissions, and LOA's were all but eliminated. LOE's were introduced but without the same assurance that an LOA previously carried.

This year - that may or may not be the same. The needs of the Army and academy prevail.

Guidance on the cycle usually comes out in late August/early September. That way the Supt has had a chance to review the previous class's performance through Beast. Usually there are not major changes, but then again, it is a new Supt.

Inquiring minds....

I am really curious if there were any Cadet Candidates that received an LOE, but DID NOT receive an appointment?

What no rolling admissions....

Great question and on going debate about the subject of not having rolling admissions. Yes, last year close to this time it was announced Class 2017 would be the chosen without rolling admissions policy. For those who do not know, rolling admissions was a method of selecting applicants to fill the on coming class. Every Tuesday, admissions would make a selection from completed, qualified applicants from the pool at hand. So having your application completed early would afford admissions to review your applications several times before the dead line. Now, it is still important for you to complete your application early, this includes nom source. However, most of the class applicants will know if they have received an appointment by March into May. Notification were sent out much earlier than in the past with rolling admission, thus allowing “Plan B” to be pursued. WP admissions did issue appointments in November and December in hopes of capturing key applicants early. Admissions still meets every Tuesday for selection.

Now the selection process on how they make a decisions is a whole other topic that 845something can start.

I hope that helps.

LOA and LOE....

LOA (Letters of Assurance) was a tool to capture key applicants by giving a seat/slot for the next class. These were given with or without a nom source. At one point with great argument there were too many LOAs given and not allowing others to compete. This was in hopes of attracting applicants from other competing schools.

LOE (Letters of Encouragement) given out to those applicants who were very attractive to WP and invited them to spend a day and night at WP. Travel costs are the applicants’ responsibility. This year it was rumored, between 150 to 200 LOEs were issued.

Have those LOEs already been sent out for the class of 2018? That's awfully soon if so!

I'm pretty sure he means LOEs for the class of 2017
