Arms used at USNA?

My only "con" is that first DA trigger pull is brutal.

It's an acquired taste..takes some getting used to. Recommend practicing the DA/SA transition. I really do like the simplicity of the DA/SA system...pull the trigger and it goes bang everytime.

I sold a Sig 226 to buy a Colt 1911 a year or so ago.. I like the barrel length of the 226 over my M11, but otherwise essentially the same. That being said, I shoot the 1911 much better,

In other news, I shot a Glock 19X yesterday. It is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist (in my opinion).
Also, it's not so much "sand colored" as it is "gold", in my opinion.
It's hideous.

Range Update: My DS has 1,700 rounds thru his P228/M11-A1, and he (obviously) still loves it.

I bought a Hi-Standard GB model .22LR three days ago, and have shot it every day since.
I simply have always wanted one, and it shoots like a dream. It was made in 1950 and is one of only 15,000.

Proud papa post:

My DS shot expert with the M11-A1 pistol last week. One of only two in his Company to do so.
He's jazzed about getting to wear something a little different on that uniform for Parents Weekend in August.

I guess having the same pistol at home, helped him a bit. :)

Thparent. That’s great your DS shot Expert. My DS missed by 2 to shoot Expert on M4. Don’t know about the handgun. He said that he was distracted by a girl next to him with her rounds keep landing near his face and view. He was pretty bummed about it. But the Pistol and Rifle team members invited him to join Varsity Teams. But they cautioned that Rifle Team Coach is not a nice guy.

He shot Sharp Shooter. So what do you get to wear on your Class A if you shoot Expert. Do you get to wear anything if you shoot Sharp Shooter. How often can you qualify range. Is it once a year?

Sharpshooter is the same ribbon as Expert just with an "S" on it instead of an "E" and the Experts get that actual Medal to go with the ribbon. At USNA as far as I know, they do not requal - that is left to after graduation.

Thank you for the Expert knowledge on this nice to know tradition at USNA!

As a Corpsman I did medical coverage at the ranges and got to fire every weapon owned by the Navy/Marine Corps team. Of course we are required to qualify as well. I was always a gun nut but putting so many rounds down range at taxpayer expense helped me to quality expert several times over on the .45, the M-9, M-16, Sig 9mm whatever that designation is, and I've spent some time popping off with the M-2, M-240, M-203, M-79, and one of my favorites, the M-60. I was handed an MP-5 one day to do things with. I get giddy just thinking about it.

Marine officers who move on to the Fleet though will have to drop the ribbon from the uniform, replaced by a marksmanship badge.

DevilDoc that's outstanding! Is Marines Marksmanship Badge equivalent to Army EIB which includes qualifying Expert on Marksmanship?

Turns out he was 3 points away from Expert on the M-4, as well.
So he will have an "S' on that blue ribbon with the three yellow stripes, and an "E" on the blue ribbon with the two yellow stripes.
Pretty sure Rifle is first (after whatever unit ribbons they earn), then pistol.

Intrigued. Non military here...what are the ribbons and such? Does everyone wear them? Are they only for shooting results? DS was (bummed) to miss expert by 1. I didn’t realize it really means something important (vs his skill level. Which of course I’m happy for him if he is happy...). Will they wear this ribbon only for ppw or is it now a permanent part of his uniform?

Yes. From what I understand, they won't re-qualify during Plebe Summer (maybe not during Plebe year) but they will get an opportunity to re-qualify while they are there at the Academy.

PISTOL M11-A1 (Sig-Sauer P228)
Possible Score: 240
Expert: 228-240
Sharpshooter: 204-227
Marksman: 180-203

RIFLE M4 (like a shorter M-16)
Possible Score: 200
Expert: 170-200
Sharpshooter: 160-169
Marksman: 140-159

On the uniform, they will just wear the ribbon (for Marksman) or something like this (with the "E" and "S" devices):

If they graduate as Naval officers, I think that they can transfer these to their Ensign uniforms (but don't quote me on that!)

If they end up going the Marine route, I know for a fact that the USMC doesn't recognize these, not do they recognize the medals that go with them.

It's sort of like why when you graduate as a Marine Corps Officer from USNA you have to go through The Basic School, before you're REALLY a Marine Corps Officer. If we haven't taught you how to shoot, then you don't know how to shoot, son!

Those who commission USN will carry these over. This who go USMC will not. They will shoot again at TBS and the USMC wears shoot badges. In all honesty... they are shooting ribbons and the lowest ribbons on the rack. Not real exciting. Everyone pretty much has them. Some will requalify while at USNA, most will not.

Just reread my post above. I didn't mean to suggest these shooting ribbons don't mean a lot to the midshipmen. I am sure they do. My primary purpose was to provide a picture of the USMC shooting badges for reference.

Is shooting something they will practice during their time at USNA? Those are really beautiful!!
