Army BOLC dates for 2019?

DS had less than 48 hours from commissioning to AD, his path was... Graduate on a Friday, commission on Saturday, pack on Sunday . Start active duty Monday , drive to Ft Knox as cadre for the summer. 2-3 days travel time to Lawton for FA BOLC.

My son is also working at Ft. Knox this summer. He is there until Sept. 14. He has to be at Ft. Leonard Wood for BOLC on Sept 16. then after BOLC he is back to Ft. Knox as his first duty station.

We're tearfully helping our son sort through his stuff and pack for Ft. Gordon (BOLC and his permanent post). He leaves us on August 6th and reports on August 9th (the date I posted earlier was tentative). The end of an era, for sure.

Could be a lot worse. Ft. Gordon is equidistant between Savannah and Atlanta and not much farther to Charleston. He'll be happy to meet you there during those four-day holiday weekends.

My DS did his S-BOLC course at Ft. Gordon. There definitely worse places to live than Augusta. (Fun fact: the Godfather of Soul grew up in Augusta.)

I would recommend Charleston over Savannah or Hotlanta.

Is your DS Cyber or Signal? I am assuming Cyber?

Wish him the best!

Yes, he’s Cyber. I didn’t shed any tears during his boarding school or college years (not even on R-Day), but this move is different somehow, more permanent, and it exposes where we are in this cycle of life. He is our only child and came along in our 40’s. We are retired and truly on the periphery of his life now, which is as it should be, but bittersweet all the same. We have a lot of family and friends on that side of the country (we’re in AZ), so his post is geographically desirable, and we look forward to occasional visits and exploring the south. But that empty hole in our house. Ouch.

Tell me about it!

We went from having four children in the home, to three, two and then one. Now at zero with DS traveling to ABOLC at Ft. Benning in January it is a major transition for us.

It hits us hardest when we see other families with young children (we have no grandkids yet), or we see a little league game going on....or we pass the high school on an autumn Friday night and see the stadium lights on.

Others may cheer the "freedom", but we miss the ruckus....a lot.:(

I agree with what you say, but man I love the smaller electricity bill every month:groupwave:

If it gets real bad, let me know, and we'll lend you our dog.

That way, you won't have a hole in your house anymore, though you'll find some new ones outside. And we'll have our freedom.

I remember after our youngest went off to college, about a week or so later I told my wife that I've noticed that when I come home after work everything is in the same place as it was when I left, and nothing new strewn around. That was a nice plus, but like most, we do miss the mess.....sometimes.

Note to all newly minted Army 2LT's. : BOLC Dates are subject to change!!!

DS originally was originally scheduled to report to Armor BOLC on 15 January 2020, after commissioning in May of 2019.

He just got notified to instead report on 24 November 2019.

We lose 52 days including the holidays with our boy. :(

The needs of the Army....

You'll still get 2 weeks +/- during the holiday. They get dismissed for the Christmas exodus.

Not sure of the travel distance he'll have to visit you.

Good to know, he gets a break for Christmas. Exodus is the right word. It's over 2,400 miles from Columbus to the San Francisco Bay Area.

While it is a Christmas break, it's not a break without leave. If they leave the base they have to have a pass for short trips and still have accountability checks if they have not taken leave and can only travel shorter distances. Many commands will allow them to take advanced leave if they have not enough accrued but some don't. If they decide not to or not allowed leave then they are still on duty and only get the days off that the Army chooses. Both of my boys have spent at least one Christmas at their duty station, they had a couple 4 day weekends but still had to go in for at least part of the day during the rest of the days. It's not like Christmas break at College where everything shuts down and they are just dismissed and can go home, you still have to submit for leave and have it approved.

And who's to say that they'll even want to come home when they can go anywhere they want if leave permits? Gone are the days when (school) breaks meant coming home to mom and dad. :(

If that ain't the truth. The Bahamas are just a short hop from the Atlanta airport.
