Army Critical Languages

Can anyone explain how this works for ROTC stipend and study abroad? I know which languages are critical and DS is considering switching from Spanish to Russian for college and I am just trying to gather as much info as I can to help him make the decision. If it matters, he is 4-yr scholarship winner, will be a freshman in the fall, and his major requires 4 semesters in one language and 2 in another, or 6 of one. Appreciate any tidbits you can share

I would suggest you use the SAF search bar. There have been a number of threads on this topic, complete with explanations, relevant links and tidbits galore.

I would give thumbs up to Russian if DS really wants to put forward the effort--Spanish if he wants to cruise.

I would add that you should understand the Army requirements for study of a critical language. I don't know if Army has them but Navy requires X semesters in language specific studies and Y semesters in cultural courses for that language. I don't remember what the numbers are but it cvan yield extra pay in the Navy.

My DS who is an Army ROTC MS-IV, received a $1,000 stipend for passing Mandarin with a B grade or better, this past semester. The program is called CLIP-B (Culture and Language Incentive Pay - Bonus). He can earn another incentive this spring for 2nd semester Mandarin.
