"That was news to everyone, including officials at West Point, according to three people involved with or briefed on the event. The academy had been looking at the option of a delayed presidential commencement in June, but had yet to complete any plans.
“He’s the commander in chief, that’s his call,” said Sue Fulton, a West Point graduate and former chairwoman of the academy’s Board of Visitors. “Cadets are certainly excited about the opportunity to have something like the classic graduation, standing together, flinging their hats in the air.
“But everyone is leery about bringing 1,000 cadets into the New York metropolitan area for a ceremony,” she added. “It’s definitely a risk.”

We need a standard font color for sarcasm. I almost thought you were serious.

But of course, the esteemed and highly powerful Sue Fulton (????) had a quote that said there's risk. Hmmm. That is deep digging journalism. But she's a grad so I am sure all grads were involved in the meeting. The supposed three people who were involved and briefed but couldn't be mentioned in the article must not have been as well known as Sue Fulton who was apparently not at the meeting but was available for a quote that had absolutely nothing to do with the details discussed in the meeting.

Not my experience. I had a lot of humdingers thrown at me, trying to "trip me up" on whatever they thought I may be obfuscating. I just told the truth and got through it, but I'm telling you that they didn't make it fast, or easy.

Ummm... no.

Three thousand cadets have to return to West Point over a 3 - 5 week period. Keeping them away longer is not an option, unless they plan to cancel Beast, CST, and delay BOLC by several months.

With respect to any impact on health, the few hours taken for graduation have little significance.
Wait... aren't our potential adversaries taking a time out?

I watched a live stream of the press conference from the Pentagon with Sec. of the Army, Army Chief of Staff, Sergeant Major of the Army, and Superintendent of West Point:
  • Class of 2020 will return to West Point in 5 cohorts (friends with USNA Firstie said they will return to Annapolis in groups of 5 starting in mid-May, but I don't have any other confirmation of this)
  • President accepted invitation to speak at commencement in February
  • Decision to change the date to June 13 was made over a month ago
  • Best line of the day by Army Chief of Staff when asked how he responds to those who say it's crazy to bring 1,000 cadets back to West Point: after meticulously walking the reporter through the logical reasons he summed it up with, "We can't telecommute to combat."

this was published yesterday, USNA graduation in Annapolis in small groups. returning to Annapolis in 5 groups over 10 days, about 200 in each. only 4 mids allowed company space at the same time.
still not the same as the whole class in the stadium, but much better than virtual graduation from home

MV was state champs in basketball in 79 when he graduated. They won in football four years later. Talent is cyclical there usually because of the base housing kids. They are currently in an up cycle for football. Both my kids are MV grads and contributed to several district titles and came close but never past district play. The school boundaries include Potomac River mansions and Route One low income apartments. In recent years the rich folks have started sending their kids to private schools.

The current Principal at Mount Vernon is Dr. Anthony Terrell, a 1989 graduate of The Citadel and a former U.S. Navy Officer. I was in the last graduating class of the original Groveton High School.

I didn't know that about Dr. Terrell. Groveton has several famous and prominent alumni. Other than you, there's General James Jones '62, actress Donna Dixon '75, Rear Admiral Christina Alvarado '76 current deputy director BUMED, and a bunch more but you probably already know that.

Coincidentally, I teach up the road at the "new" Groveton, West Potomac High School which has a few notable alumi as well. I'm sure our location has a lot to do with that. The Groveton building is now Bryant Alternative School.

I still feel sorry for the graduating class. Even as a graduating cadet, I was not prepared to fully realize what a big, monumental, 2-3 day event it was (there is far more to graduation than just the speech and hat toss) and my family certainly felt the same. They will be missing out on what I can still say to this day was the best day of my life (so far, lol). There's a ton of super smart people at West Point...I'm sure they'll figure it out.
