Army ROTC 3rd Scholarship Board Results

Looks like my DS didn't get selected for the national scholarship. We have heard about reservist scholarships. Does anybody have any experience with that route? Requirements? Pros and cons?

He would have to join the National Guard/Reserves, the scholarship through the Guard would be the GRFD, the scholarship pays the same as the National scholarship, the one caveat is that when he commissions he would be commissioned into the National Guard/Reserves, he would not be able to go Active Duty.

Would he be doing once a month weekend duty and two weeks active during college? And is there any way to transfer to active duty later?

Yes he would have to go to weekend drill once a month even during school, he would also have the two week training during the summer. If your son took the GRFD scholarship he would be locked into the Guard for at least his 8 year obligation. After that there would be a very slim chance of transferring to Active Duty. That being said there have been times when someone has been able to make the switch but it's rare and it depends on what is happening at the time.

Thank you!

Just checked the site and found out my daughter is a 3 year winner. Her top 3 were offered Norwich, Westfield State or UMaine. We had gone with plan B because we didn't think we had a chance. She was offered a partial swim scholarship to Franklin Pierce U which was #5 choice so we were planning that route. Going to have to discuss this with her tonight since this is definitely a BIG game changer for us.
We're from MA too! My daughter was being looked at by some smaller schools for soccer, but really wanted a bigger school and the ROTC route to becoming an officer.

Congrats to your daughter!

Can you explain the transfer and how it could potentially work? I think I recall reading it somewhere here on the site. Want to make sure I know all of her options so I can be prepared to talk to her about it.
Congratulations!!! Transferring the scholarship is always an option, there will be instructions with her offer letter, again congratulations to your daughter and your family!!!
All the instructions will be with her offer letter, but basically she would accept the scholarship to one of the schools she was offered and then send in her transfer request per the instructions to cadet command. She will need to give reasons. She has a month until she has to accept and then the transfer process shortly after will be due. My suggestion would be to talk to all of the ROO's at the schools she was offered and also the ROO at the school she will be swimming at. Talking to the coach and making sure she could do both would be important too. I am sure she could use her partial swimming scholarship for room and board. The one caveat is swimming time commitment is unique and different than other sports so a conversation with both ROO and coach before requesting a transfer would be a good idea!

Congratulations everyone!! If you did not receive a scholarship please please know as a mother I want to just hug you right now. It's tough, but don't give up now!! There is more $ out there at your school. Our DD is a freshman and she has seen it! You go to that school and you ROCK THEIR SOCKS OFF!! You be the best you can be, don't complain, volunteer to help, don't get in trouble and show them your grit! It is not over unless you want it to be over. Call the ROO, make them remember your face, be that person the cadre can count on!

DD received a 4 year AROTC scholarship to her two top schools, Bucknell and Fordham. She will likely accept and go to Bucknell. This is an unbelievable opportunity and we are so proud of her. She is still waiting to hear back from NROTC and USMA, but this looks like a great fit for her. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

TRANSITIONING TO AND FROM ACTIVE DUTY
If you’re considering a transition from your Army Reserve unit to Active Duty status, contact your local recruiter. He or she will be able to determine if you are eligible to transfer, and will assist you in the process.

Pick up a DD Form 368 Conditional Release from your Army Reserve unit. Your recruiter can help you fill out the form. The first general level Officer in your chain of command must sign off on this form. It's a lot easier in the reserves due to your commander and a recruiter can work together to get you out. Even with a ROTC Scholarship you have to compete for AD as a commissioned officer they give each cadet an OML in college and the top get commissioned into AD the others get commissioned but in the Reserves, this is from reading military forums and asking questions. So even with a ROTC scholarship you are not guaranteed AD. That is how I am reading what others have written.

Sounds good in theory, but getting that DD368 approved is a different story, especially if the Guard/Reserve paid for any of your schooling.
