DS has started his sophomore year of school but has yet to receive and tuition payments or stipends. He says that he cannot contract until he takes his PRT scheduled for October. It seems like this is a little late, if the cadets have already been at school for a while. Is this possible? Worried that DS is overwhelmed and procrastinating to get his paperwork turned in.

Are you referring to passing the APFT?

Has your son competed all the required paperwork, most importantly the 104R?

I am surprised they did not have him take the APFT either before classes started or very soon after. It seems like a long wait before taking the test in October, considering that cadets don't start getting their Stipend until they contract and are not payed for any time before contracting. The Stipend is part of the scholarship and contracting benefits, waiting that long leaves the cadet short. Even if he had not completed all his paperwork they could have still had him take the APFT earlier. When my son's started ROTC the Battalion gave the APFT two days before school started, made sure they had their paperwork completed and held a contracting ceremony the day before classes started, this included 3yr scholarship cadets that were starting their sophomore year. Of course every Battalion operates differently when it comes to these issues.

I would ask your son if he has completed all his paperwork if that is your concern. Once contracted the tuition will be set up for payment and he will still receive his book money, the only money he will lose is the Stipend he did not receive while not contracted.

If all of your son's paperwork is completed to include being DODMERB qualified, and he was validated through the 167-R last JUL, then he can contract right now. In fact, all scholarship validated 3ADs should be contracted on the first day of school of their sophomore year. Our BDE was on us for that this semester.

Waiting until OCT, just screwed him out of September's monthly stipend.

My son, a 3yr AROTC sophomore at an SMC, is yet to contract.
None of the other 3 yrs have contracted yet.
They are all up to date on paperwork etc.
They have been told "to be patient".
The Bursars office tells me 'He is on the list" so they are not asking for money.

Must be Cadet Commands new money saving program, just make the cadets wait for a month or two and save the Stipend that would have been paid.

Thanks for the info....my son is also playing football and he's been using it as an excuse to not complete his part of the paperwork even though none of his fellow cadets contracting this semester have been contracted. Take care.

Sounds about the same for mine, except he hasn't completed all his paperwork. Thanks for the info.

I have no way of knowing if all that is completed, but he definitely says the other cadets haven't contracted. They do have new leadership and administrative personnel so hopefully that's the issue. Thanks.

Although your son is an adult now and in control of what he needs to do, you may want to give him a gentle kick to complete his paperwork. When the time comes to take the APFT and sign the contracts, if your son does not have all his paperwork completed and can't contract with the others, the Cadre may not be in a big hurry to get him contracted. This will result in further loss of his stipend and at $350.00 per month it adds up quick, plus the school's accounting office may not be as patient as time goes by. Not being ready to contract when the opportunity presents itself will not put him in great favor with his Cadre, and that's not a hole he'll want to dig himself out of.

My son has a 3 year Army scholarship at an SMC. He is currently a junior. He contracted in August of last year before the fall semester of his sophomore year started. His paperwork was completed during the spring semester of his freshman year, if I remember correctly.
