Army ROTC March 2013 Board

If a scholarship isn't offered, do they send out a "sorry but..." letter? I'm becoming less optimitic as time goes on and we'd like to make some decisions regarding colleges but as long as an ROTC scholarship is a possibility, we'll wait, however how long do we wait?

Correct, if your portal doesn't change within the next several days, that is usual an indication that you did not receive a scholarship, which you will be notified via mail.

The above answer is not entirely correct.

If you do not receive a scholarship the status page will remain as it is.

You will eventually receive a letter but not right away. You will receive a final letter sometime in May, until then your status page will stay as it is and there will be no notification from Cadet Command until sometime in May.

You can always call you #1 choice school and ask the ROO if you received a scholarship, they can see this information and should be able to tell you,

I am in complete shock right now. I got a scholarship to my #1 school. Words can not describe how happy and blessed I feel! Wow

So how many days do we wait to figure he did or didn't get one? I am loosing hope as his hasn't changed.

If plan B is in place and ready to execute you can easily wait until April 15 or even 22 to make your decision and still have time to pull the trigger. At least that was my experience. Heck, if necessary you can even overnight the acceptance and deposit. I know it's emotionally urgent to make a decision, but in actuality, unless there is something else going on I'm unaware of other than normal May 1 acceptance deadlines, there is really no reason to rush. Nerves of Steel is the order of the day! Hang in there. :thumb:

In the past it has taken a few days for them to load all the scholarships into the system so don't give up hope. My son's was loaded into the computer system around 11 am on a Saturday morning a few years ago.
Has your son tried calling one of his schools to see if they see anything?

If you haven't seen the status change by midday Monday, tell your son to call the ROO at his #1 choice school, they should be able to tell you his status.

Has anyone received their letter yet? Hoping to see it in the mail today.

At this point my son's portal has still not changed. Does this mean that he is not being offered a scholarship at this time or is there still a chance that not all portals have been updated yet?

My son's offer letter just arrived!

He is being offered a 3yr AD scholarship to both his first and 2nd choice. The portal only shows his 2nd choice FYI. He has to decide between ECU and UNC-P which will be a hard choice since he visited both campuses and really liked both programs. I think he was hoping the Army would help him choose. We did hear through the grapevine that a lot of 3 year offers are going out this time due to the cuts... but 3 is better than 0 in any book.

Stat wise, he was:
Athletics:
Varsity letter Track, Rifle Team, Band. Participated in Football until injury.
Leadership:
Eagle Scout: Secretary of Order of the Arrow Lodge. PL and SPL experience
JROTC: Cadet Major, Battalion S3 - Operations Officer (150 student JROTC program). Cadet of the Month Award, NCO Excellence Award.
Scholastics:
ACT: 24, SAT around 1120 (don't have the exact number in front of me)
3.6 Unweighted GPA, Top 25% of class

He also received a Congressional Nomination for the USMA, but because of ACT/GPA we kind of knew he wasn't competitive. He still shows as eligible but we assume his chances are pretty low. He is still hoping for a possible Prep School offer there.

The USMA has sent him to the DODMERDB already, and his status is pending the outcome of a surgery he is having later this month.

3 year

I was just wondering if I got a 3 year scholarship, do I not start the whole ROTC program until my sophomore year or if I start freshman year and just don't get the stipend? Thanks for any help! The letter finally came today!!

The letter explains it... you still have to participate in ROTC your freshmen year, you just aren't contracted. You don't get paid the stipend/book pay, and you have to pay room, board & tuition etc. You also have to maintain a 2.5 GPA or better during your freshman year, and a 3.0 in your ROTC class.

I got my letter with a 3 year AD to Case Western or University of Richmond

Like kcdale said, you will fully participate in AROTC your frshman year as a MS1 cadet.

Show up ready to go, be ready to pass your APFT even though you won't be contracting right away. Don'y just pass the APFT, work hard starting now so you can get as high a score as you can. This will be the first chance you have to make an impression to the cadre. Keep your APFT score high and work hard to keep your GPA high as well, participate in ROTC EC's, this will keep you in a position to possibly have your scholarship upgraded to a 3.5 year by the end of the semester if the battalion has that option.

Congratulations to those receiving their letters.
