Army ROTC scholarship for room and board

Just curious, can an Army ROTC scholarship switch from R&B to tuition another year, or is the initial decision binding for all years?

Pretty sure that room & board awards are school based, not Army. AROTC awards the tuition, fees, books, and stipend, and then some schools add room & board and/or other perks. I could be wrong but that is my understanding.

Almost but not quite.

The National AROTC Scholarship can be used for either Tuition or Room & Board, the cadet decides which one. You are correct in the fact that some schools will offer partial or full Room & Board to students that are on a ROTC Scholarship.

I understand it is either tuition or R&B and R&B is taxable income. My question is if the decision is binding for the duration of the scholarship, or if it could be switched. For example, say student has a full-ride tuition scholarship for honors program from the school and chooses R&B from AROTC as a freshman. Can't maintain grades in honors program (required GPA is higher and courses more difficult) after first year and loses tuition scholarship. Can student move the AROTC scholarship to tuition the next year, or is the R&B decision binding? Thanks!

My DS never switched but, I believe each year, you can notify Cadet Command before the semester begins of which option you wish. The default is to repeat what you did the previous year.

Ask your cadre to be sure.

Well, there ya go! I think I recall that now but everywhere my son is considering offers R&B so it was in my head that the scholarship would cover tuition. Plus that taxable thing!

Tuition is generally a better deal. In most cases R&B is less than tuition. If a cadet has other scholarships that cover tuition, then making the switch to R & B is still pretty good, as most cadets are in a very low tax bracket anyways.

THANK YOU!!! Will definitely confirm before signing, but wanted to see if it was even an option.

Wish we would've learned which ones did earlier! :/ . . . life lesson learned for next kid! (Is there a list/link or did you have to call each college/ROTC to find out?) TIA!

I don't know if there is a list. When my son was researching schools, he checked each one to see what they offered. Fortunately all of his top three choices offer R&B to national scholarship winners.

There is a stickie post at the top of the ROTC forum, but you have to read through it and one should always call the college to determine what the latest info is.
