Army ROTC Scholarship Prospects

Clarkson

As always -- grateful for the education. Question -- if you submit updated SAT/ACT scores after you've met the board, who updates your score and your position on the OML? Is that done by Cadet Command since your file isn't reboarded?

Falcon A,

The ACT/SAT scores can be updated on the candidate application portal or by sending to Cadet Command. I believe Cadet Command updates each file for the board and the following board meeting. I believe the board updates the OML after each board. I found this on a college website:

"Once you have completed your interview and provided verification of your information contained in the scholarship application; your personal information and interview will be evaluated by a board of Army officers. These officers will assemble during a typical school year and will review scholarship prospects with completed applications and interviews at the time the board meets. These officers are generally Professor’s of Military Science leading ARMY ROTC programs across the United States. The board of officers will create an order of OML, mentioned earlier, by rank ordering all the applicants based upon their total Whole Person score. It is possible that all applicants are qualified for an ARMY ROTC Scholarship on a particular board. Once the OML is compiled and based upon available scholarship funds, Cadet Command will determine how many scholarships will be offered for that scholarship board. Any applicants who are not offered a scholarship on that order of merit list will automatically be considered for a scholarship offer when the next board meets."

Yep -- got all that.

Still not clear to me what can happen AFTER you've clicked "submit" and you meet a board. I thought your whole person score was "locked" after you met a board and no updates that affect your whole person score could be made since that would affect your OML. If I'm interpreting Clarkson right, there is no down side to submitting your file for the first board since you can continually update your your SAT/ACT and your student activity listing even after you've met the board. If this is correct, this is a very different understanding than I've had previously.

I also interpret it the way Falcon is. So, yes this is an interesting question.

If it is like the SA system, than yes you can update after being boarded. They just take that portion, be it SAT or ECs and rescore that aspect. They than create the new WCS. That new WCS would be used for the next board.

It's actually called the Whole Person Score (WPS) for AROTC. USMA uses the Whole Candidate Score (WCS). I am not trying to be picky but I am just clarifying so there is no confusion about the two acronyms and scores.

No problem, but I tend to try not to get that picky.
~ It is a running joke here how I speak in acronyms, and posters can't understand me.:)

I try to keep it the same all around because new posters and lurkers than wonder what is the difference between WPS and WCS if they are applying to SAs and ROTC.
~ Not to generalize, but most candidates applying to both will use ROTC as plan B and they are accustomed to the acronym WCS. Once, you start throwing in WPS, it can send them off kilter.
~~ Look at how many threads exist regarding if they can submit their CFA for the PFA? For lurkers and new posters the answer is NO.

Just saying, that sometimes we have to leave the smaller things aside, so those that do not understand the finesse issues can understand the big picture. Big picture is it is a Whole Score, what ROTC calls it and what the SAs call it doesn't really matter. What matters is the system explained to them.

I hope you do not take offense by my reply. I am just trying to explain why I use certain terms. I know that it is a WPS, but if I was a parent of a rising senior applying to both routes, my question would be what is a WPS, is it the same as WCS for the SAs?

Finally, this to me another reason we need a ROTC sticky.
~Things like the WPS and PFA can immediately be answered for posters and lurkers without them ever posting the question.

Have a great day.

Yep -- I'm trying to figure from Clarkson or other AROTC experts who the "they" is. I thought it all took place at the Board which is why I thought no update happens to your WPS/WCS or your OML placement after you've been boarded. Still waiting to hear the definitive answer on how this really works. Just curious and want future folks to know the accurate process picture.

I agree with you Falcon. It is very important from a timely aspect for the class of 2020.

AFROTC is way different than AROTC, but I believe their 1st boards meet at the same time, and frequency.

AFROTC will not accept anything after junior year, except for their SAT/ACT scores. Many will take Sep/Oct/Nov exams, thus, their scores will be in before the 1st board.

The issue becomes the queue. Many candidates will start submitting next month. The board only meets for 3 -5 days. If 3000 are in the queue come Dec. , and could only process 2000, the remaining 1000 will hear nothing. In that case, if I have been informed correctly, the remaining 1000 that took the Dec., but scores were not reported in time, will have the latest updates in their profile. If the candidate was boarded, but sent for reboarding than the Dec. scores would also be included.
~ AFROTC last year started to walk away from reboading every time. Their newest system from what I gather is ...Yes, No, reboard at the last board in the end of March.

We always need to remind every single candidate...if this is the only way to afford your dream college, re-think it, especially if you do ED. You could get a congrats letter from the school and no ROTC scholarship to that school.

A/NROTC ties the scholarship to the school. Filling your list with only reaches can hurt you.

Excuse my ignorance, but when is the 1st AROTC board for 2015?
