Army rotc scholarship transfer

Hello:

I am looking for some guidance and help on the topic of transferring a 4 year Army ROTC Scholarship from a senior military college to a civilian university.

I am a current MS1 freshman and am looking to transfer schools after the end of this year. I have a 4 year national scholarship. Is this scholarship transferable to the other school?

If it is, what does the process look like in doing this and what is the timeline.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
 
I believe the national scholarship is transferable. The transfer would need to be approved by Cadet Command I imagine, there would also need to be a slot available at the school you wish to transfer to.
 
I haven’t talked to my cadre yet. I plan on doing so next week. Just wanted to make sure it was possible before I approached them. Thanks all for the help.
 
Also if someone could help me with this. How time sensitive is this matter? Should I contact the new school I wish to transfer now and meet with my cadre now? Or can I wait until after the first semester. As always, any help is appreciated.
 
Meet with your current cadre first.

If you contact the other school first, they will likely reach out to your current cadre and you don't want them to be blindsided.
 
I just want to say, it's way early in the game to decide to leave an SMC. Life there generally improves after your "training period". Just make sure you aren't making a rash decision.
 
Thanks. I did some research and it said both gaining and losing PMS have to sign off on it. If the losing PMS says no, what happens from there?

I believe that this is unlikely to occur. Your current PMS may demand an reasonable explanation for wanting to trasnfer, but all cadre realizes that this sort of thing is normal. According to a ROO on this forum, there is unlikely to be any punishment. Best advice is to let your current know before approaching the new school ROO.

then you can't transfer - either suck it up and drive on or quit

Not quite true, since you're a freshman you do not need to "Suck it up" You can still transfer to a new school and enroll in ROTC, the issue is whether you will be offered a scholarship by the new program. If you leave your current school before the start of your sophomore year you will not owe the Army any of the scholarship money you have received up to that point. You are free to transfer to another school and join the ROTC program, you do not need a scholarship to join an AROTC program.
 
@cadet44 what Jcleppe said! 100 percent. However, if you want a chance of retaining your scholarship, talk to your cadre. I would start with your MS professor, he/she is your “adviser” of sorts for the year. At least at civilian colleges. Once you have discussed then you will have to talk to someone, most likely the PMS. Get guidance before talking to the other school, if you want the chance at the scholarship transferring. I think from past threads that I remember transferring it once you have contracted is simpler if it is in the same brigade, but maybe someone else can comment more on that. Just remember it is not guaranteed, so you can always fall back on what Jcleppe said, leave before first day of sophomore year and then enroll somewhere else and join ROTC and compete for a campus based scholarship.
