Son just got back from talking to a Army PMS
PMS said that he would have a better chance at a AROTC scholarship
if he had a major in a hard science or engineering
Called 'STEM preference'...Maybe Science, technology, engineering, math?

Is this true?

If you get a scholarship under this program, what is to stop you from switching majors?

Personally, I don't know what the scholarships will look like this year. But... I'm starting school this fall with an International Relations Major and I have seen many members of this board get scholarships with non-STEM majors. That being said, the Army could have changed the process again. I know the Navy/Air Force do look for STEM majors.

I, on the other hand, have been award the scholarship for this fall with a major in aerospace engineering. After reading hundreds of posts on this board, this year's Army ROTC scholarships have been a mix of many different majors. However, when we start talking Air Force and Navy, I have seen mostly those STEM majors. As for this year, I don't believe major mattered with the Army. Things could change though for this upcoming year.

I am a political science/philosophy major and I got a 4 year Army ROTC scholarship. During my interview, the PMS asked me why I choose those academic subjects over a hard science and i explained why and related it to the Army and leadership somehow. I dont think they care too much about what you study

A STEM will probably be chosen over a non STEM if both files are otherwise equal. The guidance from higher is that we need more STEMS, but a fully qualified scholar/athlete/leader will get a good look no matter what the major. As far as switching, you have to ask before you switch, and it's up to the PMS to allow you to switch or not. Haven't seen that request be denied yet, but I pity the scholarship winner that becomes the first.
