ARMY ROTC Third Board Winners

When will the letters be uploaded to the upload file ? And typically when does the mail arrive ?

Son won 4 yr to UMass Amherst and U RI was accepted to both for Honors College programs. He was shooting for Cornell, Bucknell or Layfayete as higher choices. He is 95% sure that he is going with UMass. He only applied for the 3rd board, we didn't understand the boarding system.

Looks like there are a lot of 3 year scholarships this time around. Is this typical of the 3rd Board or due to budget constraints this year?

My understanding is that the 3 year scholarship starts in the sophomore year. Is that right? If so, is there any way to start it right away? Has anyone heard of the local ROTC unit supplimenting the federal scholarship or do they usually award others who don't have any at all?
How does the service commitment change? Do the 3 year scholarship students end up in reserves after graduation? Are they given the same opportunities as the 4 year winners?

We are very proud and excited to have a scholarship! Just trying to figure out how this works.

For what it's worth, Hopeful Mother, 1. my DS was awarded a 3-year to NCSU which he is not taking (he's going to PSU where he also got a 3-year), so they have one available at NCSU; and 2. the PMS at NCSU told my son that he's never had to say no to a transfer request; he always figures out a way to make it happen.

Thank you so much for the information. We spoke with Mr. Ward Friday and Mr. Newkirk is suppose to call Monday. They seemed very okay with the situation. Just one more waiting game, you know.

Thanks again and a BIG Congrats to your DS.

The 3-year scholarship does start at the beginning of Sophomore year. There is no way to start it early. Some schools have been able to offer an upgrade to a 3 1/2 year or 4 year scholarship, so that funds can start in freshman year. Some colleges, will kick in free room and board or other scholarship funds to 3-year scholarship awardees their first year, so that the school can still be affordable the first year until the ROTC scholarship kicks in Sophomore year.

Son received 3 yr to Bowling Green and Western Michigan and has been accepted to both.

After everyone throws their acceptances onto here, I might add it to the excel sheet from the second round.
