Hi all!

I was interested in what happens if you go from an Army ROTC scholarship to USMA. I'm currently a freshman in college on a 4 year Army ROTC scholarship, meaning that right now I can "get out" free. BUT, I start incurring a service obligation my sophomore year.

I'm trying to get a service academy appt (USMA or USAFA) for the class of 2023, meaning if I got accepted, I would leave my civilian college after the completion of my sophomore year. What happens to my ROTC commitment? Would my SA appt cancel my ROTC commitment? I looked at the ARTOC contract (http://www.rotc.pitt.edu/forms/da597_3.pdf) and on p. 7 there is a "release from obligations" and it mentions being released for the best interest in the Army.

Any and all help is appreciated!

No issue at all. If you get an Academy spot you only have the academy obligation. The rotc obligation is gone.

As others have stated, you may leave and go to West Point. However, I strongly recommend if you go to West Point, be as sure as possible you will go, earn your commission, and not quit. Good news for Army ROTC is, if you leave, the school will most likely get back the scholarship and offer it to someone else who can earn an Army officer commission. Bad news for West Point and between 10,000 and 12,500 students who want to go there but are not nominated or offered letter of admission, if you leave, the slot is gone and no one can fill it.
