Is it possible to do one year at an AROTC unit and then transfer to a service academy? I have heard of NROTC cadets transferring to USNA, but is it be possible to transfer from an AROTC unit? Or are only NROTC cadets eligible for transfer? Not sure if anyone has ever done anything like that or not.

Thanks!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it matters in terms of eligibility. You could be in any ROTC unit or none at all. I think the advantage would come elsewhere on your application - say nomination or showing yourself to be ready for military life - but it shouldn't matter for eligibility.

I am an army cadet at an SMC, and it can be done with no problems if you're not contracted or started the contracting process yet. I know there are some hoops if you are contracted, since I know of a cadet who was contracted here who got an appointment to USAFA.

Yes. I think the advantage of staying AROTC or a NROTC Mid applying would have an additional Nom source. I do not believe AROTC can provide a nom to USNA, only USMA.

What should I be doing as a freshman AROTC student to have a better chance at getting an appointment? I'd imagine having a good GPA and PT scores. Anything else?

There is no transferring to USNA. You would just apply (or reapply). You would still be at USNA for 4 years. I don't think AROTC looks any worse than NROTC. It shows interest in military life.

Above all, pursue a plebe-like schedule — in terms of both rigor and subject.

Plebes take Calculus, Chemistry, English and History. They also take Navy-specific and PE courses. They take 17-19 credits each semester.

The academic side should be easily duplicable. Take challenging courses in those subjects — not remedials. The military-ish courses, you should get from ROTC/MS obligations. The ROTC fitness programs will help with the PE aspects — not to mention the CFA. Also seek out leadership roles, especially within ROTC.

So yes, with commitment and dedication, you can somewhat mimic a USNA mid’s experience. Excelling at that will be a strong signal to USNA that you’re worthy of appointment.

Hey! Yes you can! I just got an appointment for USNA '25 and I was part of the Michigan State University Army ROTC unit. The only thing is that your ROTC nomination will not be valid. Mine got rejected from the academy since it was Army. So start working on your senate and congress nomination applications (if you have not already). Also I forgot to mention, if you have a 3 year scholarship then you can since you are not binded to the army yet, but if you have a 4 year scholarship then you will need to contract which binds you to the army. That is what I was told so maybe dig more into that, and I was a 3yr scholarship recipient btw

Honestly what I did this past year, was simply work my a*s off in every aspect (academically and physically). Get involved with the clubs in the program and build a great reputation with your peers and instructors. Also, let them know ahead of time about your desire to apply to the academy so that they can start working with you without any pressure. Take the classes that the Academy recommends we take as college applicants (Calc 1, Chemistry [the lecture and the lab as well], Physics, etc...). I am wishing for the best for you, but I also recommend you work hard as if you're gonna stay there. You never know what might happen before it does, so always have a backup plan. Good luck! Do not hesitate on contacting me if you have any other questions in regards to ROTC!
