Well I come from a family of Naval Academy grads, but I wanted to keep my options open and consider the Military Academy as well. Anybody care to offer their opinions on what's better/worse??

this is the west point forum army of course :yllol:

but it just depends on what you want to do in the military

BIG question there. If there is one thing I learned over the past 2 years, it is that the services (not just the career fields and locations) are very different. The culture is different, the focuses are different. Your best bet is to talk to members of both services (I guess Army is what you need more insight on if you have Navy family), do some research on career fields, and visit the academy. They are very different, but both are equally important. Yes, it is the USMA forum, so we are apt to say Go Army! However, I most recommend that you look at the differences in BRANCHES first, then academies, since you will spend more time in the service you choose than at the academy you choose.

There's no worse or better choice really. I like to praise the army more but at the end of the day, everyone's in the military, on the same side, with the same purpose. It's all your choice. Look into all the branches. Maybe one branch has more fields of interest? Everyone has different motives. You could also talk to recruiters too. They would be glad to discuss each branch with you.

It's good that you want to keep your options open. Many may follow the family tradition, which is a nice thing, but not if its not what they want.

I was in the same boat as you, but opposite. Both of my parents graduated from West Point, but I got into both academies. I visited, talked to grads, cadets/mids... In the end I chose Army, but it was a tough decision. The best advice I can give is don't rush...consider all of the opportunities both offer, etc etc.

And although I am biased toward WP, I don't think you can make a wrong choice.

Good luck
