AROTC 2nd Board notifications

I'm not being ungrateful l. Really. I didn't even know a 3 year scholarship existed for freshmen so it was kind of discouraging when I saw winner and I thought that was gonna be a 4 year and it turns out its a 3 year
 
My guy too is waiting for USAFA, USMA, and USNA...However, I think this will be it for him...and that he will be delighted.
 
Alpha, not for a minute did I think you were being ungrateful. I read your post as "Oh no, now I cannot go to college because I don't have enough money." Decades ago, when I left the Naval Academy (in the pre-tailhook days--you can look that up if you don't know what that means)--my parents felt it was unnecessary to assist me with paying for any further college. The Army awarded me a scholarship that had an unfunded year. It meant that there were times that I would bathe in the locker room because I did not have any money for shampoo or soap and that I would ration food or sneak food out of the dining facility to cover me for breakfasts and on the weekends because I had a 10 meal plan. I joined SMP because I needed the extra $150 a month. I took out a student loan. That 20K per year in the 90's seemed impossible to meet. So, no, you are not ungrateful. But you should be happy. The Army believes that you have what it takes to be an officer--and they are willing to pay for you and wait for you for four more years. Good luck.

Why do you think this will be it for him? If he was awarded a 3 year then I would think he has the qualifications to also be accepted to the academies.

I wasn't referring to you. I was talking about the guy that said he will gladly take my 3 year
 
XC-I think it will be an overall lower GPA...he just crossed 3.5 with this 7th semester transcript and GPA recalculation, mid-1200 test scores, and he is not a varsity athlete (he does a club sport not offered at schools). Of course, he is an Eagle Scout that drips leadership and military bearing--and would trip over himself to help anyone who needed help. I think it will be too much to overcome. But...he has not been rejected yet either...so...maybe I will be wrong but I have to leave it up to the admissions offices at the different academies. All of his applications are complete and he is playing the waiting game. I think he will be happy with the choices he has before him--Army ROTC and a SMA.

Getting into a federal academy includes factors beyond the applicant's control. The academies admit based on geography ,race/gender, etc.
Academic qualifications a just one part of it.
If the goal is to commission, then great he has a clear path.
 
For all of those still waiting, my DD was in your shoes last year and was notified in April her winner status 3rd board, so don't lose hope!

Very few 3 years on the 2nd board were upgraded to a 4 year on the third board, not saying it is likely but it happened. Now talk to all the schools on your list, call the ROO and get the details for each school. Yes it is different for each. My daughter had 1 public and 2 private as options, the public was less money for tuition but she would be on the hook for room and board all 4 years, so the savings the first year did not help.one of the private schools waived room and board but not until her scholarship activated, the most expensive school offered room and board waiver for all four years. That helped a lot. We took loans for her tuition freshman year and the school gave her some academic money. She also had schools in two different batallions, one has not had any 3.5 year upgrades for the last few years and the other batallion has. She chose the school that offered 4 year room and board and possibility of an upgrade knowing if something happens with her scholarship down the road she will have to transfer. She was upgraded so we paid tuition for one semester and this semester was covered.

So talk to each ROO and the financial aid at each school. (She contacted the ROO and I contacted financial aid to understand our options) she has a small Stanford loan and I have a parent plus loan and it all worked out.

Don't decline until you have done your research regarding school of assignment. As others indicated some schools give room and board scholarships for all four years for 3 year recipients. Some schools give In State tuition for 3 year scholarship recipients.

Take out loans for the first year or transfer the scholarship to a school that provides these financial incentives.
 
Hi all - parent of a winner. Bit confused on how the college choices work. He got a scholarship, but to schools he listed as 2d and 4th choices. I see some comments here about transfer of scholarships to other schools - anyone have any insight on how theta works. Hypothetically, if he was accepted at his 1st, 2d, and 4th choice colleges, is it possible to use the scholarship for his first choice of college? Is that a decision - some sort of transfer - made locally at the fist choice college ROTC unit?
 
DS 3 year to Clemson and Alabama. Didn't get his number 2 school Penn State. Deciding if he wants to ask for a transfer. Anybody know when he will get the info to start the DODMERB process?
