Good evening all!

I am currently weighing out my options, because I was blessed with a 3 Year Army ROTC Scholarship during the 2nd Board. My selected major was: Biology.

It wasn't until today that one of the nursing schools I had applied to accepted me. Now I am aware that AROTC Nursing Scholarships are far more rare in number, but would a request to change majors be a possibility?

Thank you all for your time!

Talk to the ROO at the school you want to attend. The ROO told me a major change is fine and that I would just put my new major down on the paperwork when I get to the battalion in the fall. So look up the contact info for the battalion at your school and try to get in contact with someone over there. Good luck!

The Army has a specific mission for a number of nurses per year. While it is true that one major change can be processed at the Bn level, that may not include nursing. Check with the ROO at your intended school before doing anything.

That is correct, nursing scholarships are different than line scholarships. You can change your major but you would lose that 3yr scholarship. You can have your ROTC unit send in a request to change it to a nursing scholarship, and Cadet Command would make the decision. A big factor is if the ROTC program you are in has a nurse mission. If it does not, then you won't get a nurse scholarship. If the have a nurse mission and no nurses in your mission set, then the chances to get one increases.

Is it possible to change your major to nursing, but still commission into line service, and not nursing service?

Yes, and that is actually happening now as there are more nursing cadets than Army Nurse slots available.

At an informational meeting I attended with my daughter last spring at her current school it was outlined this way:

They have a mission for 3 nurses (that specific school) if seeking a scholarship, any more than 3 would need to seek a scholarship for national guard/reserve.

If awarded a scholarship for nursing, the Army expects you to become a nurse, however a low OML might land you in reserves, iAnd to be a nurse you must pass the nursing boards. He didn't address what would happen if you didn't pass? I am assuming commission into another branch?

Non-nursing scholarship cadets can major in nursing but may branch into something other than nursing.

It sounded like to me as @MohawkArmyROTC has stated above, that there is some flexibility (but not a lot), however, needs of the Army will always win out, and the scholarship paths are separate between nurses and everyone else.

I may be totally wrong about this and I only mention it as something to watch out for. I know in NROTC (and I'm assuming AROTC) they will work with someone majoring in nursing, and with a nursing scholarship, in terms of conflicts. Because of nursing labs etc. there are a LOT of conflicts with NROTC stuff. I would be wondering if they would be so willing to do that for someone who majored in nursing but wasn't on a nursing scholarship. Again, I have no idea, but it might be something to explore with the officers in the unit.

We are in this same situation with my daughters whose a 3yr scholarship winner with pre-med as her degree. One of her top choices Norwich she was accepted to their nursing program. We were worried about her still being accepted to Norwich but admissions said it was easy to change her major but asked how come we didn't just stick with the nursing program. I told him I didn't think we could do that since she's not on a nursing scholarship. He advised us to talk to the ROO for guidance which we plan to do during our visit. We don't want to run the risk of her losing her scholarship. If still majoring in Nursing and branching in another field is an option it may be one she's ok with.

We are in a bit of a different boat - DD applied as a Nursing major - but got into school for her 2nd choice, Bio. It does not mention on the portal whether the scholarship is nursing specific, and our concern is she can't use it. Does cadet command let you change a major out of Nursing. The ROO is working to get her in nursing but might not be able to. Any insight in what to do?

Just keep working with the ROO, and they should be able to navigate it. Our ROO stated that a line scholarship can be used while pursuing a nursing degree, but they would most likely not commission as a nurse. On the reverse, nursing scholarships are expected to be nurses. And yes @CapeMom in none of her paperwork or on the portal will it say nursing scholarship, but the schools do. Good luck to both, and keep us posted what you learn from your journeys!

If your daughter has some hard questions for the Norwich ROO, she should contact her now. I am friends with the Norwich ROO and she is leaving in a couple of weeks to take command in Ft. Lewis.

We missed her by a day but it seemed that she trained her replacement well. My daughter is on the fence about Norwich but will hopefully make a decision either way in the next week.
