AROTC 3rd Board...Place to Wait

From what I have read on other threads, (you can search "AROTC transfer" to see more details), there is no telling for certain if the transfer will be successful or not. However, the majority of people I have read about trying to transfer have been successful

Waiting on the third round. My son didn't apply until after the first board. (Being an army family for 21 years you'd think we would have been more informed about the process, but we didn't even realize there was more than one board until I discovered it on this forum - so thanks to all of you who post great info here.)

On to my question...

Our son is passionate about ROTC and the Army and fully intends to be a lifer (do we still call it that?) However, he was so inspired by GEN Stanley McChrystal's call for American youth to complete a service year between high school and college that he decided to concurrently apply to AmeriCorps.

http://www.franklinproject.org/stan_mcchrystal_a_million_young_people_to_empower_america

AmeriCorps receives approxamately 500,000 applications each year for only 80,000 slots, so you can imagine how overjoyed he was to recieve his acceptance a few weeks ago. He has already responded and committed the upcoming year to them as he knows that if he commissions in the Army right after college, this will be his one chance to serve America in this unique way. He hopes that if he is awarded a scholarship in this board, there may be some avenue for him to defer for one year. If anyone has any insight, I would greatly appreciate it.

Additionally, if he is not able to defer, could he reapply next year using the high school application again?

Thank you.

I apologize for the hearsay but I have some news. I just spoke with a colonel that asserted she has a close relationship with the cadet command. Last week, she was told the 3rd board scholarship winners would be posted this week. The delay may be attributed to a new system but she wasn't sure. She's going to call me back later this afternoon with an update. Regardless the decision is coming shortly - and I suppose this isn't any new news.

I'm really anxious, I have been checking my status everyday since the board met. I hope the delay is fixed soon so the winners get posted. Thanks for keeping us updated!

I'm curious to know how they tell people they have been declined... Anyone know? Either from experience or just hearsay.

Best of luck to all my fellow waiters :)

I don't want to sound discouraging but I was also told there are fewer scholarships available for the 3rd board. It's sort of whatever money is left over. So, I guess that puts us all on the same boat scrambling for the few life vests that are remaining. Best of luck to ya'll!

These days it's getting harder and harder to earn scholarships especially in shrinking military. Our local ROTC unit cadre said the the mean ACT for the 2nd board was a 30. Wow.

I'm assuming the portal changes will come out on a Friday like they did with the 2nd board....there's no telling whether it will be tomorrow or next Friday, or even if it will be a Friday at all...but be checking, and good luck to y'all!

My portal changed around 2:00-2:30 PM central time on a Friday after the 2nd board.

I'm glad I prefaced my last post as "hearsay". As JS15000 suggested decisions MAY not come out for another week or so as cadet command reconciles their budget. That's all the information the colonel could give me.

I also might add getting some face time with your favorite ROTC unit. They may have some additional money to give outside of the national scholarship. I'm buying the plane tickets as soon as we get the logistics worded out. Gotta have a plan B.

Well..for what it worth I contacted Cadet Command in my region (today) and was told that the board did convene on March 9 thru 13. The person there said to check every couple of days as news should be posted very soon (duh..I check every 1/2 day LOL :).

Yeah...was thinking the same thing. A little surprised it wasn't today.

Congrats on your DS' college acceptance today! Although we didn't hear about ROTC today, we did get the FAFSA results for DS' top two schools. So now he has a clear picture of which school to choose if he doesn't get the scholarship. Plan B - check. Also, hope we don't have to use it.

Ugh...really thought it would be today!!

We have three "accepted student" college visits planned over the next two weeks to really get a good handle on what DS wants to do...one to DS #1's Alma Mater (where he doesn't want to go but has a scholarship) and he will be able to sit in on a few classes and hopefully have a more positive attitude!

Have a nice weekend and stay positive everyone!

DS was accepted to NCSU, since we are from the Mid-West, it is exciting for us all. Waiting for word on the scholarship is making us all a little crazy. He will attend NCSU, regardless but the scholarship would be great. I know from lurking that some many others are in the same waiting boat. Best of luck to you all!
