AROTC 4 year scholarships announced

I didn't win and I have the following
ACT: 26 super score
UW GPA: 3.57

20-30 hrs a week work during school year
Master of Ceremonies
2 academic clubs
Church Group leader
College Credits
CYO Basketball (no varsity as I am homeschooled)

Then for the PFT: 64 push-ups, 40 sit-ups, and 6:14 mile

I'm hoping this is enough to win at least something!

So are the boards separate for Army nurse applicants or are they all on the same board? And if your status has been on "boarded" and you didn't receive a scholarship this go around, does that mean your application won't roll over to the next board? If you have any information on this please respond .

DS didn't win this round either. 32 ACT. 4.0 unweighted GPA, several AP classes and college dual enrollment Varsity baseball, part time job, volunteering and decent PFA. Interviewer said he would highly recommend him so that went well. Also won Dwight d Eisenhower leadership award. Hoping for better luck next round but the waiting is a killer! On a positive note he got an acceptance letter to University of Alabama today, and his ACT score qualifies him for some very generous scholarships. Dream school is Clemson though and ROTC scholarship would definitely make that more affordable.

My daughter the exact GPA and superscore, she also had similar activities but also 2 varsity letters. She received a scholarship 3rd board for 3 years. However there are tons of factors, including your interview and survey. Just keep positive and keep plan B in mind. Meaning pick a school you can afford as a backup and plan on attending in the Fall and competing for a campus based scholarship if the national board doesn't select you. I know it is a long wait, my daughter didn't have an answer until April 4th last year. Good luck!

You do roll over do not worry. And yes nursing is at the same board. My daughter is currently an MS1 on a 3 year national scholarship and she received her scholarship 3rd board, but was boarded on the second. Your name will stay on the list with your boarded score. Remember this board they only award several hundred while the next two boards historically have been around 1000 each.

He sounds very competitive, first board is only a few scholarships compared to the later boards, good luck to him! And yes, waiting is a killer!

Wait, I'm so confused... I didnt get one.. but I have like 3.8 UW GPA, 31 ACT, scores perfect 200 on MUN interview... I though I would've received something...

There's no rhyme or reason on how folks are chosen. Trust those of us that went thru the process more than once and have been around a while. Your stats are above average for AROTC but *generally speaking*, those getting scholarships on this 1st board were the over-achievers in one form or another.

Yeah, I see that. I was nationally ranked in several activities, and I received a scholarship to study Arabic in Morocco from the government from Pete's sake. I thought I was good lol. I really want to see the the people who got it. I will say that one of my friends applied (she is Valedictorian of my HS and perfect GPA and SATS and other great stuff, and she still didn't get it).

I will tell you my DD's stats, be warned, she is a big time overachiever. Her father and I are of course very proud, but recognize we had very little to do with it. We scratch our heads like where did she come from??

GPA 4.0 unweighted

ACT 35 numerous AP's -most rigorous schedule at a highly regarded academic private school (thinking possibly valedictorian)

Leadership-
Class President -senior and junior year
Class officers- previous years
President of MUN
Captain of Robotics Club
Co-President of Key Club
Captain of Varsity Soccer team 11,12
President of JETS

Athletics-
Varsity Soccer, first team all league 9,10,11 league MVP 11, team MVP 9,10,11

Competitive Club Soccer- 7 years

Varsity Cross Country 10,11,12

Varsity Track 10,11

Varsity Softball 9

Work experience?
Paid Full time internship working at the Naval Postgraduate School for eight weeks the past two summers. Doing research on materials for warheads?? (Way over my head)

She has received many awards. Student of the Year and such

She wants West Point (she has an LOA) more than anything and has a huge desire for service. She is incredibly hardworking and humble.

There you go, since you asked. Hopefully I didn't come off as being Braggy!!

You did............................but so what. She deserves all the props she can get and I know from experience that you and her father had plenty to do with her success. Her resume is indeed impressive. If she can't get into WP, they might as well shut the place down. Does she have any desire top play soccer at WP?

LOL!! It's impossible not to sound "braggy", this girl is a force to be reckoned with! According to the Athletic Director at school, "she's a BEAST!" And she'll be absolutely furious with me for posting any of this! I'm hoping she's too busy to check the forum. ;)

She would love to play soccer for West Point, but doesn't think she's good enough. She might try out or she may decide to do something different like Triathlon.

Thanks for your words, but seriously it is all her. I'm just her cheerleader.

Got home tonight and checked the portal - DS was offered a 4 year on the 1st Board! We're all very excited and humbled....lot's of great young men and women have applied, and we're totally taken aback with the offer. We frankly looked at his application, and thought 2d board best case, probably 3 year. His offer definitely shows how the WPS levels everthing out....his application isn't strong in all areas, but he is extremely well balanced, with lots of sports and leadership stuff. We're very thankful tonight, and will know get busy on a final school decision and prepping for the DODMERB.

For everyone still working on your application, or waiting on results, don't get down! Let the process work itself out, and keep a Plan B/C/D ready to go!

Waiting for DODMERB information now. Excited DS2 was selected first round but recognize DODMERB may uncover something...

My son has a 3.8, 31 ACT, JROTC BN XO, Color Guard Commander, Honor Guard, Academic Team Commander, Rifle Team, Football, various JROTC and school level awards, Boys State, Academic All State 1st Team Football, BETA Club (this school doesn't have NHS, so this is the best we can do) 4's on his AP English(s), World History and US History, just finished dual credit Chem and is starting dual credit Eng, volunteers at the VFW and is a member of the Auxiliary. I wish he had one more sport but knowing what I know and based on prior experience with the previous child, I am hoping he'll get a 3 year on the last board. In fact the school he interviewed with said that he's a good candidate for a 4 year but a 3 year is most likely and that's actually what I'm hoping for. That year will give him a chance to adjust without feeling like everything is for "all the marbles" the second he walks on campus.....that is, if he gets anything....

My DS was selected for a 4 year scholarship to all 3 of his schools. His academic stats are more mundane than most of the winners:
GPA 3.7; ACT Verbal 670 Math 640
However, he does take all IB courses and working on the IB diploma. His counselor attests that he is taking the most substantial course workload of any recent student.

He does have a substantial, though unspectacular resume:
Varsity 4 years soccer and track (though at a small school) Captain of the soccer team
Marching Band 4 years and field commander
Student Treasurer
Boys State
Community Svc
Soccer referee 5 yrs, which is, admittedly, a very tough job.

I believe where he may have stood out is with his interview. The ROTC interviewer praised him afterwards and stated that he would be shocked if DS didn't receive a scholarship. Recently he had the CGA interview and, for the part I watched, he was impressive in the manner he spoke and the information he gave. The CGA interviewer was glowing in his accolades, saying that he would want him on his crew and offered to go to bat for him with admissions.

If you're in the military, especially the Army, long enough, you understand that sometimes selection boards make decisions that seemingly don't make sense.

I've been through literally dozens of promotion boards, senior service boards, and special assignment boards during my time in the Army. And, I've seen the results of hundreds of these boards.

Inevitably, you will get "Why wasn't I selected?" or "How the heck did he/she get selected? reactions.

What I've learned is you can never know what the board was looking for or the basis on which they made their decision. Each board is different.

I guarantee that if the same exact AROTC applications were before a different board, the results would be different.

There is no science to this. It is purely subjective.

Best wishes to all.

I don't want to seem insensitive to your disappointment, but don't compare use of to others who won, don't go down the road. And one more time, you did not, nor did your friend, "not get it", the decisions are not complete until March. By comparing others stats you will drive yourself crazy and also risk disparaging the accomplishments of others.

That's not my intent at all. I'm quite over it now. I'm not pressed anymore. I'm simply impressed by all the amazing kids who got the scholarship is all. I'm sorry it came out wrong.
