Anyone gone into a 4 year scholarship with 30plus credit hours? His plan was to take 12 hours and not push to graduate early, but that may not be possible. Will they allow him to graduate a year or semester early? or will they allow him to double major or get an extra Minor?

Also will this mean he attends basic camp sooner? (it would be next summer but he is an MSI and not MSII)

And does his GPA in community college count towards his OML ranking? Do they look at Institution GPA or Cumulative GPA?

I was under the impression you had to go in with under 30 in order to be eligible for a 4-year. I could be wrong but I remember thinking that my son would totally be in the clear going in with 12 had he gotten a 4-year but he ended up with a 3 so definitely in the clear. I would contact his ROO asap. He’ll probably have the most accurate and update info on that topic. Good luck!

Do all 30+ hours count towards his degree requirements? for reference my DS graduated HS with 66 credits which translated to 58.5 credits at VMI. However, only 20.5 credits counted towards his Civil Engineering degree. He could have worked hard to graduate a year early, but since the Army was paying for it, opted to take a lighter class load each semester which allowed him to concentrate on his grades and now entering into his senior year has a 3.564 GPA and for his final year will only have to take 14 credit hours each semester. He contemplated a double major but decided against it.

I believe his Community College GPA does not count towards his OML ranking, it's only the ranking for classes taken at the school that count.

Our DD came in with 34 credit hours. She's classified as a "junior" coming into MS II year. Many of the credits count toward core curriculum and allowed her to take a light class load freshman year (although with MLSC & Corps Leadership she still had 17 credit hours last spring). As RBI90VMI has said, the lighter load is a real benefit...especially if your son is involved in things like Ranger Challenge. DD had extra ROTC labs 5 AM workouts, extra range day training, and sometimes weekend commitments, etc. The GPA from community college most likely does not count toward OML, but you check with his cadre specifically on that. Also, I do know other 4 year winners who came in with even more credit hours and the only thing it seems to be affecting is related to getting specific majors (but that may be school specific).

This was our intention knock out some basics and then take 12 hours per semester to lighten the load especially the first year of college acclamation. I am not sure if all of them transfer but they are all low level core classes. I doubt they would penalize him for saving money and time, but who knows! His current GPA is 4.0 so that sucks it will not help him.. LOL I will have him contact the ROO. Thank you for the information

Are they all college credits or AP credits?

Besides the AROTC ramifications, the credits could have consequences for their degree or other college requirements depending on the school they attend.

AP credits are easier to deal with because you don't have to accept them. Ds's advisor was adamant that students should not accept AP credits until they were needed.

My ds only went in with a few college credits from dual enrollment which allowed him some breathing room his freshman year so that was really nice and didn't affect his ROTC scholarship at all.

A minor, or second minor would certainly be allowed. Further, regardless of how many credit hours one has, one cannot graduate until ALL required courses, including major courses, have been completed. When she graduates, according to the college, is totally under her control.

Reading the OML and Cumulative GPA in the regulation it is not clear. It says you calculate all transfer and ROTC credits into your Cumulative GPA for the OML. An example of ROTC GPA would be if you take ROTC at a sister school, so you have to calculate the GPA into your institution GPA. I will get to the bottom of this and let everyone know the precise answer.

Every class he has taken will transfer so, he will at any rate "take his sweet" time and have a double Minor as long as the Army allows him to do so. LOL Or he graduates early, but not sure how he completed MS1 thru MS4 in an expedited fashion.
