AROTC and AFROTC 4 year scholarship commitment

If you are offered a 4-year and accept, are you immediately obligated to commit, or is there a time period that you can back out... We had an NROTC rep tell us that you have until the first day of your sophomore year... but don't know how that works for AROTC or AFROTC. Son is as sure as a 17 year old can be that this is his path, but, he is 17...
 
Up to the first day of sophomore year one can walk away from AFROTC and AROTC with no further obligation.
