AROTC Basic Camp (CIET) 2017

Thanks so much. My son is told he is going with 8th Regiment in early July but the schedule posted shows HOLD for 4th, 8th, and 10th Regiments. What does that mean? Go Army!
I will be there at 8th regiment as a CIET Trainer! :)

DS, Rising MSIII just rec'd travel orders today. 8th BDE west coast school. He's excited to head out and has a completely open mind about what to expect.

@burtz

How many APFT's do we get? Because I'm afraid that my current PT score doesnt reflect my fitness at all because I got hurt in a car accident back in May 20th, and that hurt my hip and lower body a bit to the point where situps and running just weren't happening.

I really need a good final CIET evaluation for the purposes of a medical waiver, so after our first APFT at camp, do we have a final APFT, and do we have chances to workout/improve on our own time?

Thanks!

What travel arrangments does your DS have to get from the airport to Ft Knox, and do you know if we are supposed to report in ACUs?

Thanks!

The cadets will be picked up by Cadet Command and driven to Knox. My DS reported in civies.

DS traveled in khaki shorts(it was hot) and his Army green Polo shirt. Weather into Chicago delayed his arrival into Louisville until 8:50 or so last night. Cadre were there to greet them, gather them all up, and get them to Knox. No word from him since I've landed. I'm sure he's busy.

Tip for Anyone heading to Basic Camp, Know the Soldiers Creed, Cadet Creed, and the Army Song. Also if you get injured while at Knox, be prepared for a long process if the injury is a LOD. I just came home with a LOD injury, it is a long process.

What is LOD?

Line of duty

(I will request that the administration add this to the Acronym list.)

Typical day (which varies a lot due to issues that are beyond the control of the cadets)
Wake up: 0400 (We usually were up by 0330)
Formation: 0415 (Be early!!)
PRT: 0430-0630
Personal Hygiene: 0630-0645
Breakfast: 0700-0730
Training: 0800-1200 (May be classroom or it may be hands on, you don't know unless you got lucky and got the schedule for the following day)
Lunch: 1200-1230 (You eat MRE's)
Training: 1230-1730
Chow: 1730-1800
Training/Counseling: 1800-2100
Lights out/Personal Hygiene: 2100-
They say lights out is at 2100, but we sometimes were not even at the barracks by then so just be prepared for this to change depending on your situation. It isn't hard so don't be scared, the Drill sergeants will do their best to intimidate you. Don't let them get to your head, stay sharp and focus on your goal. We had many cadets quit because they doubted themselves. The worst part is being away from home, but you learn to rely on your fellow cadets for physical, mental, and emotional support. The first 8 days are the hardest, because you are not ina routine yet and it's really hectic, just do not fall asleep and take a lot of notes. Read your Cadet handbook, it will make your life so much easier! Best of luck and I hope this helped. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will clear them up

I didn't know they could quit CIET. What happens then? Are they done with ROTC for good?
They can quit, the Drill Sergeants encourage it...a lot. If you quit then it goes to your schools PMS and the majority of the time you are done with AROTC. I only know of one Cadet who quit and was allowed to attend the next year, but he had to attend Advanced Camp directly after Basic Camp so I do not advise quitting. The American Red Cross is there and if a family member is hospitalized or there is a death in the family you must go through them to get your Cadet home. Once it passes the Cadet may continue where they left off. You can not miss more than 48 hours of training or you will be sent home.

Thanks MMICadet2017. My cadet is there now. I'm looking forward to hearing all about it when he gets home next month. Thanks so much for posting what their day is like.

@Turtle:
DS says been a good experience thus far. Sounded tired but happy. He's been PSG and now PL so good chance for him to experience both aspects of leading and managing up to 35 kids.
He did mention that a cadet quit during one of the layouts...don't know if from his platoon or not. He was bummed to see that happen but does realize it's not for everyone and no one really knows the circumstances except that kid. We all wish that cadet the best either way.

Says hot and humid and asked to have us send extra soap and deodorant...I'll send another batch next week to be sure.
Typical day says start at 04;30, PT, clean up, eat breakfast in 7 mins or less :), train till 12/1, eat an MRE, train til 5/6, eat dinner in 7 mins or less, train, dismissed 9:30 LO @10:15.
out in the field now.
Looking forward to hearing about what they did.

@MJP - thanks for the info. We did get a call from our cadet Saturday night. He sounds great and really seems to be enjoying the experience. He has a few Cadets from his school in his company and quite a lot in his regiment. He did the Spartan race and said it was amazing. Only thing he asked for was a pair of his contacts, case and solution to wear to graduation. He goes back out in the field Tues or Wed for 5 days so I don't expect more communication until his is back or on his way home.

Here's a link to 8th Reg Basic Camp with General Luckey. May see your cadets in the photo. Not sure if this is all the Cadets but looks like three platoons worth.

It's Flickr and you can scroll through a bunch of close up photos. Download the one's you want to keep.
