Hi! My son is tired of me asking questions so I thought I’d check in with you all! My Son is a MSlll. He is heading off to advance camp in July. He has a 3.6 GPA, participates in all required assignments. PT etc… however, his Master Sergeant ranked him at the bottom as a cadet. He says he doesn’t know why but I’m sure it’s because he doesn’t come across as someone who really wants to be in the Army. He says he does but who knows. How will this affect his chances of going active duty?

Well, Master Sergeant ranking is not part of his OML score. The biggest factor on whether or not your son gets AD is how well he does on his branch interviews this Summer. Each branch rates cadets, and that influences whether they get selected. He should interview between 5 and 10 of them to increase his chances. The overall OML score is used mostly as a tiebreaker now. You are now able to get Active Duty regardless of OML score.

Thank you for your response. He really wants to go active duty. He plans to finish strong at Advance Camp and nail the 6 interviews he has planned.

Is there no force branching? Times have changed since 2012 haha.

I guess retention/recruitment aren't the greatest.

FWIW OP, I have always been a USAR officer and greatly enjoy it. It's not a death sentence if he did choose that.

80's ....DMG, a 4 or 5 at camp and willing to go QM or Transportation for AR/NG on AD.
CA was a a fantasy. RA, what's that?

It has switched to Talent Based Branching a couple of years ago. The branches rate you as either "most preferred", "preferred", or "least preferred". That ranks you for the selection to AD for that branch. If you dont' get rated most preferred on any of the interviews, odds are you won't get selected for AD.

Is this still the case?

(e)Assignment to Active Duty.—
(1)
The Secretary of the Army shall ensure that a graduate of a senior military college who desires to serve as a commissioned officer on active duty upon graduation from the college, who is medically and physically qualified for active duty, and who is recommended for such duty by the professor of military science at the college, shall be assigned to active duty.

Just get active duty but branch is way down the list that they assign you to?
What about BRADSO for a branch detail at the front end of AD? Is that all worked out by Big Army MS4 year?

The quoted language only applies to SMC AROTC grads -- Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Norwich, Citadel, VMI, UNG. That said, I have no idea how that intertwines with interview ratings.

Everyone at Clarkson's Golden Knight Battalion that wanted active duty got active duty. Over half the senior class chose Guard or Reserves. Talent Based Branching really seems to be working to make sure graduating seniors get the best fit.

OP....your son will be fine.

If he does not know why he was ranked at the bottom then he should ask his master sergeant why. If his master sergeant ranked him low yet your son never bothered to ask why, then the assumption might be that your son really doesn’t care and doesn’t really want to be in the Army.
This is a lesson to learn. As an officer your son will (or at least should) communicate with subordinates and peers, and counsel subordinates on a regular basis. He should communicate with his superiors on a regular basis on his performance and how he can improve. A fitness report should not be a surprise, good or bad.
