AROTC Chances

Understood! My DD was accepted to The Citadel today. I am worried, because 1st yr is $52k for OOS and subsequently $18k per yr thereafter. Being a single mom making $40k a year there is no way I can afford that. I called financial aid and left a vm for them to call me tomorrow. She has worked so hard and I am hopeful. I wasn't familiar with most of this Military stuff, so am just learning. She wante to go active, so no GMI for her in the ECP program. She crossed that off her list. We did the FAFSA...any other opportunities she may qualify for financially?

Choose a state school on her list to have the scholarship transferred to. My DS won a 3 yr also. Got into VaTech yesterday, but he's not going there because OOS is $36k

Our state has Universities, but she wants a Military style school. She has USMA as Plan A, USMAPS as Plan B, The Citadel as Plan C and Plan D a local University for 1 yr and then transfer to The Citadel her sophomore year.

The issue you will have is that she would need to have the scholarship transferred to the state school and participate in that schools ROTC. Once she has completed her first year she would need to have the 3 year scholarship transferred to the Citadel, this is not always possible and is something she should discuss fully with the Citadel ROTC as well as the state school's ROTC she would be attending her first year.

The main thing would be to get the scholarship transferred so that in the case that she is not able to transfer the scholarship to the Citadel starting her sophomore year, she would still have the scholarship in place at the state school and she would have her tuition covered for her three remaining years in school. Of course all this would not be needed if she get an appointment to the USMA, but she should at least have everything in place just in case.

Let your daughter know that if becoming an officer in the Army is her first goal, achieving that goal through a state school is not a step down. Both my sons commissioned through a state school and did very well getting what they wanted when they commissioned and are very successful so far in Active Duty.

She just really, really, really wants to go to a Military school. She is the XO of the largest public HS MCJROTC program with almost 500 cadets. She has 4 AP, 4 JROTC and 2 on line classes and they just won Regionals and are going to Nationals in Texas un April. She just loves it and really just wants to live that life. She was tempted to just enlist and then go to officers school, but in her Jr year she learned a lot about the best way to achieve her goals. Admission at The Citadel said they do it all the time. I am going to speak with the AROTC department tomorrow at The Citadel. Admission told me that on average 9% of the sophomore class come in this way when they have a 3 yrs scholarship. So for her it's not about feeling like she is settling because of a State school, it's about a Military school and we don't really have one. She already was accepted to UCF and USF here too.

If your DD is competitive for USMA she would likely qualify for Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. Are those Bright Futures applications all complete for freshmen year for UCF and USF? Or are test scores, GPA, or required courses preventing eligibility? http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/PDF/BFHandbookChapter1.pdf

She has applied for Bright Futures scholarship, but my understanding is that she must use that within the state of Florida and wouldn't help her at The Citadel

That is correct. Has she applied for other scholarships? DS won a 3-Year AROTC for his Plan B school which is out-of-state. He is scrambling to apply for other scholarships to make it work since it is a state SMC that does not offer help with room and board. Just make sure she knows that you should never pay for scholarship information. Have her research scholarships from banks, utilities, businesses in the community, and such. Her Guidance Counselor can help. Feel free to send a PM.

Did she consider TAMU or UNG?

I believe both schools offer in state programs for out of state members of the Corps of Cadets.
