AROTC Downsizing

I am sure you have met ignorant/arrogant people who have this mindset. I have taught in inner city schools, and honestly, as you pointed out it the fault of our society.

Education is a socio-economic issue. Many of the inner city students have parents who work 2 jobs to keep a roof over their children's head. They are trying to survive, and unfortunately they are not there at night to check homework or be able to pay for SAT prep books. For many they also are surpassed from an academic standpoint when the child enters HS. I am not saying that the parents didn't graduate from HS., I am saying that for any parent even with a college degree we forget Spanish even though we took it in HS, but we can recall it once we are there assisting them at the table. A child with a single parent working 14 hrs 6 days a week is different than a child with a stay at home Mom. That is one reason why it is a socio-economic issue.

Another is peer pressure.

Children from lower economic families may not be able to afford sports, or maybe like you, the oldest child may become the caregiver for younger children and can't play due to family needs.

This is why the military is trying to change regarding diversity.

Are the requirements for scholarship tougher for the advantaged group than for the less advantaged group, or are they all equally assessed?

If you broaden your scope a bit you will find many rural areas that are as economically depressed as the inner cities. The inner cities do not have a monopoly on this condition.

It is tougher for kids from low income families to succeed for the reasons that Pima has stated as well as because the parents are typically less educated. I can help my kids if they are struggling in trig, calculus, etc but my parents were unable to help me with those same things. It is harder for low income and those aspiring to be first generation college students.

All of that said, when you read underserved as undeserved, I was surprised as that just wouldn't come to my mind. Maybe I am sheltered or maybe you have a chip on your shoulder. I hope it is the former as the latter will not serve you well.

Well, thankfully I have two wonderful and supportive parents who, despite their very...very humble beginings, rose above the expectations of pretty much everyone around them, so I personlly only have to deal with the geographical and educational disadvantages(which are charging to the surface now that I am fully dually enrolled in college, but my parents taught me good enough study habits that I have been able to ace calculus while simultaneously learning all the trig, geometry, and algebra lessons my high school math teachers were supposed to teach us ).

But I see it all the time. It is heartbreaking to see friends and acquaintances with so much potential say that they aren't going to college because they don't have any money for it(not that I or my parents have much either, but I do have a scholarship for tuition and a few small ones so far) or because they've been told all their lives by society and the people around them that they can't do it so they're afraid to try for fear of failure. I even feel sorry for some of the people I really disliked in high school. They always acted so big and bad, but they were really only insecure products of their environment. It's odd to see them walking around now, to see the despair behind their carefree masks, and know that their lives are over before they have even begun. I just think wow...that could have been me....Thank GOD ALMIGHTY, JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT for good parents

Fantastic! You are going to help the other kids from your area because they are going to see that you did it. Lead by example.
