AROTC MSII: Torn hip Labrum questions

Hey everyone,

I'm currently a sophomore in AROTC on 4 year scholarship. Recently I began having pain in my groin area, had a MRI....turns out I have a torn labrum and my femoral head is starting to square off.
The doctor gave me 4 options...
Don't do anything
Cortisone injection
Platelet injection
Or surgery

I had the cortisone first and it decreased my pain by about 30-40%, but I can sure as hell tell it's there. I haven't ran on it yet since the cortisone, just stair stepper and bike. Still gets very uncomfortable though.

The platelet injection is $2,000 uncovered by insurance, and its still in development and doesn't have strong statistics yet.

Then arthroscopic surgery. It's about 4-6 month recovery time my doc told me. That's why I opted for cortisone.

I still have pain, and my PMS is telling me if I'm going to get it repaired to do it now so I come back MSIII 100% and ready to go.
Question is, is this a DQ'ed injury? Has anyone had experience with this?
I think I'll have to get a waiver post-op before they can send me to any training
I had my airborne slot taken from me for this injury so I really could use any information.

Thanks

I have this injury and surgery. I went for years with Cortisone injections and it helped for a time. I actually had the initial injury in high school. Recovered and did fine playing basketball through high school and at the Academy (a few flare ups there, but nothing a cortisone shot didn't solve). What really wrecked my hip was rucking and wearing combat loads while deployed. The extra weight and walking for 20+ miles on uneven ground was about the miserable thing I could of done pain wise. I tried to suck it up for years when I got out of the USMC and finally broke down and did surgery. I workout daily now with 1-3 miles (hey I am old!) and do a HIIT class daily. Every once in awhile it flares up and I know I will need a hip replacement in the next decade or so.

Hopefully MARSYBY can chime in on the DQ part, but guessing you would have to get cleared, but tons of Cadets go through this every year. I would say solve the issue now based on doctors recommendations. Training will only get more physical as you commission and don't want to deal with that pain or delaying schools (rolling back in schools). Good luck.

I would recommend you pose your question to the folks at DODMERB consultants. http://www.dodmerbconsultants.com. They will get a hold of the people they know at US Army Cadet Command Surgeons office and give you the proper advice.

Why are you referring this Cadet to a website that I assume is going to charge him money to get an answer to a question from the Cadet Command Surgeon's office? The Battalion should be able to contact the surgeon's office to get an answer for the OP, and the bottom line is this injury could be disqualifying if the injury limits you and if it's not fixed and you aren't released with no restrictions. You are going to have to get a medical determination done and Cadet Command is going to have to deem you fit to commission. They are most likely going to want to see your paperwork no later than when you attend camp and you hopefully will be released for duty prior to attending Camp.

Thank you all for the information.
I'm going to get the surgery done and meeting the surgeon within a week, and hopefully will be under the knife within 2 weeks to start my long road to recovery.
I did some research and talked to my doctor again and almost all the patients my age (20) recover and sometimes even come back stronger due to rehab.

Fingers crossed!

Thanks again everyone!

Get a copy of the surgical records (including narcotics prescribed) and all subsequent physical therapy. Check AR40-501 and DODInstruction 6130.03 to ensure your release to full activity includes all the necessary information (range of motion...) for the CC Surgeon Medical Determination. Knowing the history will help you with the Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) too. Having all the right documentation the first time is easier for everyone. Follow the rehab guidance of your doctors! You've got this.

My DD, then cadet, got her medical determination to attend LDAC/Advanced Camp/CLC shortly before attendance at the 6 month mark after ankle surgery. She had been released for full activity about 2 months prior to LDAC.

Update:

Well I have more bad news. I went to my surgeon and we went over the MRI/CT scans again.
Turns out due to my deformed femoral head that I ended up not only tearing my Labrum but chipped 3 pieces off of my hip, and they are stuck in my joint.
The surgery is now more complicated...which means more recovery time.
They gave me a timeline to recovery from 9 months to a year which is really pushing my fall semester as a junior which might force me to be a end of camp commission.
Fingers crossed...
Hoping the news doesn't keep getting worse

Sorry to hear that. The good news... you are young and in shape. You have no idea how much that helps. It's always good to have answers. Good luck with surgery and crush rehab.

Sorry to hear that it is worse than you expected. Fortunate you followed up and now you can get it fixed right. Good luck.

Well my surgery was last Wednesday and it was successful! No more surprises once they got in there. Time to start the road to recovery.

Does anyone know when I start my medical clearance? Do I start it once I am cleared by my doctor or can I start it now?

Thanks again everyone

Just curious... if you don't mind me asking how are things going with the military as of now and if they DQ'd you for it? I had the same thing (torn labrum and FAI) and actually was prevented from participating in NROTC because of it.
