My son will be applying for a national scholarship this fall. He hasn't decided on a major yet, and is concerned about declaring something on the application. Does anyone know what happens if he lists Political Science for the scholarship, but changes his mind when he starts freshman year? Is he allowed to change majors?

Mine just pre registered for classes at UNG and changed his major from what he had originally put in the arotc app. No one has said a word about an issue. They just sent him a change in advisor email and he's good. No issues here.

yeah i had no problems with mine. I declared i was interested in major A on the application, but the university I selected accepted me for major B. It really shouldn't affect your chances of the scholarhship.

Agree that it doesn't affect your chances for an AROTC scholarship. Once at school I think they let you change your major once, without permission. Subsequent changes require permission at the Brigade level and one will need to demonstrate they will still graduate on time.

NROTC and AFROTC work differently. They care about your major and depending, primarily but not solely, on whether you change between a STEM and non-STEM it could result in the loss of a scholarship.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I read somewhere the Army started requiring Brigade/Battalion approval for major changes. Same reason as AF/Navy, they are looking for more STEM majors than non-STEM. Just wondering if any college sophomore/junior/senior has had experience with the process and all the impacts?

Thanks so much for the info! Hopefully this will calm his fears.

@DSmom_in_IL BTW - it never hurts to discuss with cadre prior to making a change whether one needs permission or not. Courtesy and avoids any pitfalls, but he'llhave no problem.

The greater challenge comes if a cadet requests to change majors later in college and risks taking longer to graduate.

All Army ROTC cadets file a Form 104R in their MS1 year with their four year curriculum. Any change of major would usually impact this plan and thus requires approval from Cadre.

Thank you! We have so much to learn about this process, so grateful for this forum!
