AROTC Scholarship Chances

I have a 4.5 GPA, and I am in cross country and track. I was in the top 25 people of my class my sophomore year, and top 5 my junior year. I am the Battalion Commander for my JROTC program and I was the XO last year. I have been on almost all of the teams we have in our program (color guard, honor guard, raider, PT, and academic). I have lettered in my sports every year so I should get the full points for the PT test. Also, I work 20+ hours a week during the school year and I expect to do well for the interview. My only concern is my ACT scores (Composite: 27, Math: 25, Science: 25, Reading: 28, English, 31). I could take it again in September but I don't know if I can bring it up by more than one or two points (maybe). What do y'all think my chances are for a four year in October?

Just curious if you have taken the SAT? I know some (including my) kids do better on the SAT vs the ACT. Keep up the hard work and all best this year with the scholarship and being BC.

No I haven't yet but I might look into it. Thank you!

@CinnamonBagel261 I can't comment on your chances for a scholarship. I have no idea.

In regards to the ACT Google and read some of the articles on prep scholar. They are free. They give excellent prep advice. Take practice tests (prep scholar has some and reddit has a lot) and then identify & drill your weaknesses.

Best to you!

If you asked your JROTC CO if he/she would recommend you for West Point or USNA, what would he/she say?

That would tell you a lot about your chances. I have seen stats like yours play very well at NROTC boards, and others struggled for one reason or another. The interview carries quite a bit of weight, as do those JROTC recommendations.

I would wait until 2nd board. My DS had similar stats. I got same advice. He waited until 2nd board and got his 4 year.
I saw a bunch of very qualified kids on first board waiting and waiting and no need to put yourself through that.

I second the suggestion to try the SAT. DS had a lower composite on the ACT than the OP after taking it 3 or 4 times , and then took SAT 3 times. He did significantly better on the SAT. He applied 2nd board and received a 3 yr AROTC, upgraded to 4 yr after last board.

My advice would be to wait for 2nd board and try improving the scores, taking both ACT and SAT as many times as money and deadlines allow.

Good luck.

I'm looking into it, but the closest testing center for the SAT is a few hours away from me. I'm definitely going to take the ACT again in September to try to bring my score up more. Thank you!!
