AROTC Scholarship January Boards - Post if your status has changed

I'm really, really, happy! I found that I was awarded scholarship to 2nd choice school, which really was my first choice but because it's private, I didn't think I would be getting one there. What a great surprise!

I'm going to the gym now to do some more sets of push-ups, sit-ups and other stress relievers. Go Golden Eagle Battalion!

Congratulations Zach! See! All that fretting and conjecture was unnecessary.

I do want to point out something to consider. You have a decision to make. If you can afford your first choice school without the scholarship then it's easy, go to first choice. But if you can't? There is always the possibility you might decide the program is not for you or you do something stupid and are dis-enrolled. Do that through your freshman year and all is well. Do that from day 1 of sophomore year or later and you will have to repay the scholarship money you received or enlist, at the discretion of the Army. It's almost always repay these days due to budget cuts. Let's pretend that happens. Can you afford to stay at #1 school anyway, where you're already established and have developed friendships? Can you afford to repay the scholarship? If not what will you do?

Of course the way to avoid all this is to succeed in the program and not do anything stupid... and I expect you can do that. Just wanted to point out some things you need to consider so you can enter with your eyes wide open. I've heard of too many kids who have been disenrolled or voluntarily dropped who thought it could/would never happen. It's not all a bed of roses!

Congratulations again. Well deserved. (And I apologize for using you again in a message really meant for the entire community).

+1 to kinnem's post.

The devil is in the details, and as I have said before this is not like hitting the accept button on internet sites ask you to accept their conditions. Read the details.

The hardest thing to read on this forum is always dis-enrollment question threads. This site is not huge, so when you read at least 1 or 2 a yr from each branch offering ROTC, it is more frequent than one might think or wish to think.

For tonight go out and have fun! Enjoy life!

Come a few weeks from now, remember to start training again because that PFT will be here sooner than you know, and the only way to contract is to pass that PFT!

Scholarship Details - 3 yrs. vs. 4 yrs.

One of the ROO's for a school on DSS's list contacted him and told him the scholarship being offered was a 3-year award to 3 schools. He explained the Army is offering many more 3-year awards vs. 4-year awards because they preferred not to have students use the first year as a free ride on their dime to see if they want to stay in or not. So they make the 3-year offer, and then if the student is doing well after the first semester, they may decide to make it a 3-1/2 year scholarship. Otherwise, if the student finds it's a fit and is passing, etc., the scholarship kicks in for years 2-4. Keep in mind, as we are, that this is just one person's take on things, and he reminded us nothing is official until the letter is in hand.

Haruspicy is not for amateurs. Unless the haruspex has been properly trained by a licensed Hittite, it will be like looking at a dish of chopped liver.

Hittite licensing exams are notoriously difficult. If anyone is considering this method I recommend that they take the Kaplan course first.

Yes. Son called the ROO at his #1 choice (which is not the college he was awarded) and he was informed the letter will contain two. Evidently the Cadre can find this out once the awards have been made.
Everyone posting today here (that I have seen) have reported only one listed on the web page.

Someone posted earlier that notifications would be made on the portal today and official letters would go out on Monday.

So basically from what you just said there, ONLY today will the notifications be posted on the portal and then once the official letters go out on Monday and you still don't see any changes on your portal then you got reboarded?

A ROO that posts on this board said a couple days ago that CC said the letters were going out on Friday, today. It looks like this board followed the last one with all the updates happening on one day. There were a few from the last board that posted they saw the status change a couple days later but they also said it was the first time they had checked.

My guess is that the updates are done for this board, of course with CC you never know for sure.

You can always contact the ROO at you choice school and ask, just to be sure.

Announcements of scholarships appeared today with a surprising and pleasing rapidity. During the last several years I've been watching, however, at each board scholarship offers exuded from Cadet Command over a week or more. So, unless they've suddenly adopted the big bang approach in Ft. Knox, there may be more good news next week.

Congratulations to all who received scholarship offers today - to your first choice school or otherwise. If you didn't get good news today, don't lose hope.

I agree with this approach! The PMS told my son that too many applicants these days look at this as a free college education and lose perspective of what this program is all about. My son's response was "this is not about a free education for me, it is about a goal to become an Army Officer and I will achieve it with or without this scholarship". I think that attitude went a long way with the PMS.

Congrats to the many scholarship award winners:thumb: Hope your mail carrier is quick and brings you the letters ASAP!

To those still waiting - March boards will be here soon( I know, its not soon enough and it becomes more difficult with so many seniors finalizing their plans and you're still in limbo).

Regardless of your scholarship status, keep yourself out of trouble, workout frequently and remember to hug your mom and dad ( shameless plug for parents everywhere:wink:) most of all, enjoy your senior year of high school -it will be over soon.

Received Notice Today!

One college listed on the website -- and it's my #1 choice. So excited.... now I just need to get into the college..........

GPA: 3.5 (but from the top ranked public high school in the US)

ACT: 30

A little light on leadership points -- football 4 years (co-captain and top lineman awards); citywide weightlifting medalist

Congratulations to you all that received scholarship awards. It just seems like yesterday when our DS got his award (last year). We live on the West Coast and it took forever (it felt like) to receive the letter/yellow envelope. Just be prepared to wait a bit longer for yours to come in the mail.

Not sure about agreeing or disagreeing on this. My son just received one of these 3 yr. scholarships. My older son received a 4 yr. and now is in his 2nd year of his scholarship. Have never heard anyone purposely using a 4yr year as a free-ride program. Cadets do wash out of the program generally for academic reasons.
This 3 yr award has us scrambling. It's too late now to apply for Fall scholarships, aid, etc.
The older son and other friends connected with the military are indicating the SMP program thru the National Guard may be better than the 3yr. In the process now of
investigating this route. Older son cadet says these SMP guys have no different ROTC status than those like him that have the 3 & 4 yr scholarships and they have secured much better financial help thru college.
I think these 3yr offers throws a big wrench into younger son's plan to become an Army Officer. Why wouldn't he want to go the SMP route as opposed to a 3yr scholarship? Saves us about $20,000 and younger son would prefer to do 9 wk basic training this next
summer anyway. Seems like a good deal to have ALL of 4 yrs of college AND more mo. money and be commissioned a 2nd Lt. just like the scholarship guys. Confused !!!

This 3yr year scholarship leaves us confused. Older son got 4yr and is doing fine. He told me today that SMP cadets in his battalion get more mo. $$$ assistance. Has all of us scratching our heads as to why younger son shouldn't go SMP route and forego the 3yr scholarship route. This "missing" yr. will cost $20,000. Why not the SMP route ? Wish someone could tell me.

One option would be to trade in the 3 yr AD to a private college for a 4 yr scholarship to a public college. This is a viable option if there is an appealing public school within the same battalion.
