AROTC Scholarship Third Round Waiters

We are getting a very late start on the ROTC process. We are awaiting appointments to two of the SA. My DS is 3qd, passed DoDMERB and his CFA, has nominations from two MOC for both of the SA he wants to attend. He has a 31 ACT, 3.9 GPA, class VP, numerous varsity letters, etc. He was asked to apply to AROTC in mid-December and filled out the application. He is scheduled to interview next Wednesday at a local university. I have so many questions I don't even know where to start. Let me just ask two and start from there.

1. I see in another thread that some have received scholarships in round one and two of the offers. They have numerous colleges listed by the listing, are these colleges assigned, or where these schools the students applied to and were accepted?

2. I know where my DS stands competitively in relationship to those that wish to attend a SA. With the information from above, how would he rate in regards to AROTC standards?

I want my DS to have all options available to him so that he can make the best decision possible. Thank you any advise and information you can give me.

1) AROTC lets you list up to 7 colleges to where you'd want the scholarship to be used at and Cadet Command will will assign the scholarship to 1-3 colleges on your list based on the availability of scholarship allocations at each of the school you listed.

For example I listed 1) St. Edward's University 2) Trinity University 3) University of Texas at San Antonio however I got the scholarship to St. Edwards's, Trinity, and Norwich. I called UTSA and they told me they didn't have anymore scholarship spots so that's why Cadet Command didn't offer the scholarship to UTSA and instead offered it to Norwich, which I had originally listed as 4 on my list.

2) I think your son looks pretty competitive. What schools did he list on the application?

Mississippi State
Alabama

In all honesty, we have been totally focused on the SA route, and we feel pretty good about it but want to look at all options.

And thank you, very helpful

Oh okay i believe there's someone on here that's from Alabama AROTC unit on the forum who could answer your questions too. I believe their username is BAMA ROTC. But not quite sure.

BAMA ROTC does post here so use the search tools and try to PM them. The fact is school selection for A/NROTC matters. As always stated there is a limited pot of gold and for those two branches it is also tied to the number of scholarships divvied up to each school. See Danimals post regarding how UTSA already filled their slate by the time they were awarded a scholarship.

Stats in the beginning matter impo, but in the end stats AND amount of slots left matter when it comes to being awarded a scholarship. They can be an amazing candidate that back in December would have received a scholarship to their top choices, but now this late in the game their top choices might be filled because the college is seen as a powerhouse for ROTC...sorry, but that is common.
~ your DSs stats are strong and he has a great chance, but now it might be that those school slates are filled.
Good luck.

My DS received the scholarship by the first board and got his 3 top school choices. Since then he has received appointments to USNA and USMA. He has similar stats to your DS, so I would think he would have a really good shot at the scholarship. As Pima mentioned, he may want to call all the schools that he is interested in to find out if they still have scholarships that are yet to be awarded. My DS did not list the maximum number of schools, as he really wasn't interested in apply to any more. As it was, he ended up applying to 10 colleges, to cover the SAs, schools he liked that had NROTC for his NROTC, different ones for AROTC and then a couple financial safety schools if he was either medically DQ'ed or didn't get an academy spot or the ROTC scholarship.

DS status is still board ready. I am guessing it won't change to boarded until March 9th when the board meets? Is this correct?

turtlerunnernc,

My DS status is also still board ready. I estimate it will take a couple of weeks after March 9th, as it has in previous boards, for the status to change. Best of luck to your DS and all of the other third board waiters!

Crossing fingers!!

Just checking-in...are we fairly close the final AROTC board review? I know the results take a couple of weeks but wanted to confirm ..

This message is aimed towards those of you still waiting:

I was in the same position as you guys 3 years ago. I applied for a scholarship my senior year of high school and unfortunately never received one. I was pretty upset about it, but know that it is by no means the end of the road in your quest to serve in the military. Probably only a quarter of my class were 4 year scholarship recipients when they entered ROTC freshmen year. By the end of the year, I'd say probably half of my class were contracted with scholarships, and by the end of last year (MLII year), you could probably count the number of cadets without a scholarship with one hand. Some of them were GRFDs, but know that there are scholarships available to those who deserve them. I was awarded one the summer after my freshman year. I don't think I had ever been so happy in my life. If you are not awarded a scholarship now, enroll in ROTC, show up to the first APFT in shape, hit the books, and you will be noticed. For the record, I had a 3.4 gpa after my freshman year and a ~260 APFT score, nothing special. The really "high speed" cadets were being offered scholarships before they had even completed their first semester.

Also, with regards to the dropping without a reason issue, Jcleppe is 100% correct. They aren't going to drop you unwarranted. Even if you are not on scholarship, they are still investing money in you. There have been a couple of cadets in my battalion who this has happened to, but there was always a reason. Either they started slacking (dropping below that gpa threshold or failing classes) or they did something stupid (drug or alcohol related). As a cadet, be where you are supposed to be and do what you are supposed to do and you shouldn't have a problem.

These two things may be different at other battalions, so take my information with a grain of salt.

Anyways, I wish everyone on here the best of luck with the next board. Not to be too cheesy, but you guys have already distinguished yourselves from you peers not only in expressing your desire to serve, but acting on it. If you have any questions about ROTC in general, please feel free to PM me. I would be more than happy to help.

DS's status changed to not selected last night. Bummed but will likely join the program at one of his colleges and go from there( or play lacrosse as he probably can't do both-
Now just waiting for the XFE from USNA...hopefully the "B" version.

Best of luck to everyone.

This was for AROTC? I thought the board hadn't even happened yet?
