AROTC School knows you selected them as #1?

Hey forum,

I am fortunate enough to receive an AROTC scholarship. I have difficult time selecting between my three schools on the list because they were honestly tied when I chose them for the application. My questions are:

Does the school you select for your AROTC scholarship know or become notified that you valued them as your designated school?

Do the other two schools on the list know that you selected another school from your Top #3?

How does checkmarking one of the three top choices affect your admissions chances at the three schools?

Thank you so much forum. My process would not have been navigable without people on this forum.

Hi,
I was on the NROTC side of things so it may be different, but for NROTC you were automatically placed on the roster of your #1 choice and had to request a transfer of unit to another school if you desired.

As for admission to the school, ROTC scholarships and admission to a school are completely independent.

Yes, the colleges know where you ranked them....unless the system has changed for AROTC. My daughter had both Ohio State and Michigan on her list at one point and the Ohio State PMS actually called and questioned why Michigan was above them on her list. (I'm assuming you know Ohio State & Michigan are HUGE rivals in football).

As far as admissions, this comes up every year but the answer is "it depends". At some schools, the PMS has some pull while other schools don't care that you're holding on to a full ride scholarship that won't cost the school a dime. If possible and if you haven't done int yet, you should try and visit each school and meet with the ROTC unit. Maybe something will stand out for you. My son actually spent the weekend with one ROTC unit and was able to do field exercises with them.

Wow thank you for your response. Your answer is extremely helpful in my decision.

Just to clarify, the Battalions know which schools you list and in what order, the actual University Admissions Dept. does not know that you even applied or were awarded an Army Scholarship unless the Battalion tells them. As far as admission to any of the universities you list on the application, the order you list them will have no effect on admissions, they don't see that information.

Yeah, I guess I could have made the more clear....not that Admission probably cares anyway

If finances are a factor, you might also look to see if any of your chosen schools offer free room and board to scholarship winners. That might be a deciding factor.

My DS received emails from the three schools ROTC program. He also sent the admissions office of his #1 an email letting them know he won the scholarship.

Yes, we can see your College rankings and where you got offers to if you listed us as one of your 7 schools. Most ROOs will notify the admissions departments that an applicant has been offered a scholarship. We do this as we want the admissions department to help us to get you to our school. Depending on the prestige level of the school and their admission standards, knowing that you have a scholarship may or may not affect their decision. For example, one of my schools doesn't care, another will think about it and may take you off the wait list, and another will accept any with a scholarship.
