Of those who were selected on the second board, I'm curious what everyone's qualifications looked like. I'm hoping my DD still has a chance with the 3rd board.

My sons application résumé looked like this: ACT m34, e31, s34, and r30. GPA 3.8. Seven varsity letters in soccer and baseball, and captain in both sports. All conf and all dist first teams in soccer. Pres of NHS. Worked job throughout HS.

He was passed during first board, but between first and second board receive West Point appointment. Then this week got a four year scholarship to his first and fourth choice schools. He is still waiting to hear from USNA, but he is pretty set on WP right now.

I honestly don't know what ROTC looks for. We thought he was real strong for the first board, but apparently not. It is nice he got second board though. But think it's not the first option now.

I apologize in advance if I should know the answer to this question. But in the lists above of where you were awarded scholarships, have you heard whether you have been accepted or denied at all these schools? My DS will not hear back from the 2 schools he received a scholarship to till April 1st, so not sure what to do about the March 18th deadline. Do you pick a school and if you don't get in, try to transfer the scholarship? He has spoken to the ROO at one of the schools and understandably, they aren't really able to give him an indication of where he stands in the admission process. I haven't seen issue this discussed much, but maybe was looking in the wrong place. Thanks for any advice!

That is my understanding. You can use the search tool in the upper right corner of the page and plug in "AROTC Scholarship but no school acceptance" -- you should get several threads on this topic from across the years.

I would also suggested having our DS contacting his admission representative at the college and explain his predicament, letting them know they have received the national ROTC scholarship to that school, which is his first school and asking if his file could be reviewed for an early determination or at least to determine if admissions in likely. If they will not give him any sense, then you will either just have to hope he gets in and accept the scholarship to his #1 choice and request a transfer of the scholarship if he does not to one of the other schools he was admitted to.

Thanks- yes, his college counselor is going to reach out to the 2 schools and explain the situation and hopefully get a sense of where he stands .

...have you heard whether you have been accepted or denied at all these schools?
Ds was already accepted to all but one but knew was being accepted just needed Senior Year schedule. For us the decision was more about since a 3 yr needed to know what actual cost of attendance the first year and following years would be. Have received several Merit based awards info but with all the schools saying they would not give financial Aid packet information until End of March/April two of the schools were out of contention since all we knew were already sent Merit scholarships and PELL value So the more expensive schools he would have to get some substantial awards to be able to attend (And likely will receive these in March/April). I wonder how many are giving up more expensive schools because schools are waiting so late to give Financial Aid info packets. In DS's case #1 school was least expensive school of the 3 allowed to be chosen. But had the other schools sent FA info when they were sent FASFA may have made a different choice. Interestingly two schools that were bumped lower on list prior to 2nd board as had not received acceptances yet, had both acceptance packets in mail today and had they been received earlier would have been in places of two others which are more expensive and would have both had a LOT better economic reasons to select. either over #1. Benefits to waiting to let people know scholarship and other awards in addition to acceptance or not could be costing colleges great students who become involved alumni.

As a dear dad I just reached out to the financial aid office yesterday and explained my predicament. I'm was trying to close a freshmen year gap of 50k (DS had a 3yr). They told me what his package looked like and I asked them to double it and got some push back. I called the admissions counselor and again explained that I simply needed his grant money front loaded for freshman year and it would actually save them money and they said they would consider. I did share that another school on my son's list was aggressively pursuing him and offered numerous enticements.

Next day I received an email with a new award letter from financial aid and it said

ROTC Scholarship Grant 2016/2017-Full Tuition, Room & Board, and Fees

I let them know we appreciated the consideration and accept the award as written.
