I was awarded a 3 yesr arotc and the frederick c branch nrotc marine scholarship to Florida a&m. I'm extremely grateful for these scholarship. I don't see myself attending florida a&m but really want to be a marine officer. VT is a top school so is it possible to join corp of cadets as arotc and then apply for a side load nrotc-mo. If I did receive the side load scholarship is it possible to switch from army to nrotc marine corps. Thanks in advance

For clarification - Are you thinking about accepting the 3-YR AROTC and then pursuing a sideload NROTC-MO scholarship during the 1st year? On the surface, I don't see any major problems with that since you will not be contracted that 1st year. I am assuming you would be enrolled in AROTC MS classes, so that may pose a timing problem in year 2.

I think the best course of action is to call the MOI at VT and ask these questions. He/She will be able to give you some better guidance.

I believe you have to be participating in NROTC to apply for a sideload scholarship. I believe the application requires an endorsement from the PNS. I don't know if VT would be different as an SMC with a Corp of Cadets. I agree with @EEBTTF that contacting the MOI at VT is a good idea.

Yes that's what I'm thinking about doing, accepting the 3-yr arotc and then pursuing a sideload nrotc-mo. Thanks for the advice I will contact the MOI at VT

After thinking about it and reading @ProudDad17 's reply. I think you have to be enrolled in NROTC in order to get the PNS endorsement for a sideload. I would think you would have to decline the AROTC and enroll in NROTC in order to apply for a sideload. Big financial risk.

Hey there,

I am currently in the NROTC program at VT. In my opinion, I would join the NROTC College Program and try to pick up a sideload scholarship. VT has the best NROTC Unit in the country, plus, we had 5 freshman get picked up on the sideload board a couple of weeks ago. It is very doable if you push out during your first semester.

I am Navy option, not marine option, but I am familiar with the unit, let me know if you have questions.
